Use

The Dutch military rain poncho is designed to fit on top of the helmet and other gear so it should fit big and tall folks in civilian life as well. This thin and light fella also adapts to really bad weather if you pair it with the Dutch woobie poncho liner. A budget version of a thermal cloak. Loud and not as good but also quite a bit cheaper.

These have grommets around the edges so that this chameleon of the garment world can also be used as a tarp.

Do you tend to lose the carrying bags of your camping gear? Now it is a bit more difficult because the bag is attached to the inside of the poncho. “It also “works” as a very unpractical pocket. In case you like to squeeze things into very small bundles, don’t use the bag. You can fit it in even smaller spaces.

Materials and care

Made of PU-coated polyamide. Normally, you don’t really need to wash rain ponchos. However, if you like to wallow in mud in addition to self-pity and feel that some sort of purification is necessary, you can do it at max. 40 degrees Celsius (104 F).

Condition

Used Dutch military surplus. Some of these have seen a bit more use. So, there can be wrinkles and stains but they are still usable. In case you like to iron everything, including your underwear, you might be happier buying a new rain poncho instead.

Mine came with free Dutch dirt inside! However being the massive brainlet I am, I put it into the washing machine on cold without soap as to not introduce whatever dutch aliens the mud had in it to my back yard. Big mistake. The inner rubber-like lining of the poncho fragmented, came loose and became some sort of seaweed like gunk that went EVERYWHERE inside my washing machine. It took me a good hour to clean out all the filters and pumps, my other half didn't see it as funny as I did. I dunno if I got lucky with mine, but just be careful if you intend on washing this! I'd recommend hosing it off rather than what I did. Oh well, it's all part of the surplus game!

Overall this is a good poncho, mine will need re-treating with water-repellent, but still a great item if you make sure to look after it after it's long service in the Dutch army. Mine obviously saw some shit.

I havent yet used this properly but have checked my preferred tarp layout and if you are also using this as a shelter, this seems to me a really good design. Its a good combination of lightweight but large enough and tough enough to set up as a tarp. Mine was acceptable condition, no rips but faded enough I am apprehensive about whether it will be perfectly waterproof even after reproofing. Still I am an optimistic chap so its been handwashed in mild detergent and I'll treat it with proofer this afternoon ;-) .

Mine is in great condition lightly used all the poppers and grommets in place and functional. Fits well with the Dutch woobie. Rubberized backing intact not pealing. Just gave it a good wipe down, don’t smell like surplus. Has previous owner name written on the nato tag. Very pleased!

Ordered one of these to pair with the Dutch “Woobie” liner.

Sure it has some dirt on it, but it is in otherwise excellent condition, with no holes, or rips. The dirt will be gone in the first rain it gets exposed to...or combined with some dirt from the Pacific North West. Whatever. It’s a military poncho not a Gucci jacket.

Came with a piece of green tape holding a small tear together. Camo and rubberization was in good condition with nearly no dust or dirt noticable.

Had almost zero smell, thank God!

Your US liner will fit in perfectly. Fasteners should be inspected and manipulated with caution in case one goes rogue and wants to rip itself off when you go to unbutton this thing.

I waited a couple months for these to come back in stock. Purchased a couple, and all arrived in very good to excellent condition. I expected to see noticeable wear and possible repairs (from their description), but these are great, no funky smells or dirt.

Two styles are noticeable: a thicker, slightly less flexible model (older dates, may be better/tougher if used as a tarp / shelter), and a lighter, more flexible model (newer dates, packs down a little smaller). Thickness/thinness is not a reflection on quality, all are extremely well made, and are in very good to excellent condition. (Follow up - the older ponchos seem to have a thicker inner waterproof lining, which seems to be a membrane attached to the inside lining which may account for it feeling a little thicker and less flexible, while the newer ponchos seem to have a waterproofing that is impregnated into the material from the inside.)

If they get more in stock, I might buy more as gifts, since friends like mine. If Varusteleka doesn't get more in stock, my friends will be SOL, cause I won't give up mine.
