History

Furrer MP 41/44 was the first submachine gun manufactured in Switzerland for the Swiss army. Expensive and overly complicated to make, it was regarded as one of the worst service firearms of all time, which is quite an accomplishment. It was in use until the end of the 1950s. Nowadays quite a collector’s item like all monstrosities are.

Features

This is a very simple yet extremely cute steel bottle with a screw-on cap that reveals a tall and narrow spout, which can also be screwed off. The cap hides a pin inside that you can use to keep the tiny hole in the spout open. The measurements are c. 88 x 25 x 17 mm (3.45” x 1” x 6.7”). These are empty but you can feel that they’ve had oil cause the surface is… well oily

Use

Originally these contained gun oil, and you can use these for the same purpose as long as you fill them with suitable oil. Or clean them thoroughly and use them for something completely different. This has that lovely retro look and feel. Perfect for a steampunk engineer’s toolbox.

Condition

Used Swiss military surplus. The submachine guns were taken away in the 1950s so one would guess that these are either from the 40s or 50s. In any case, not ultra-modern anyway. However, since this is a steel bottle, they won’t really get worn out very easily. So, in quite a nice condition albeit a bit greasy.

This thing is as swiss as can be. Wonderfull piece of craftsmanship and very charming, because one can see that it was in use but still is in perfect working condition. I bought 2 extra of theese cans as a gift for good friends. And mine already sits in my "swiss rangebag" and waits for action ...
