Gerber Dime multitool

Gerber Dime multitool

22.99 USD

A cute little keychain multitool with just the right amount of nice-to-have tools for most everyday stress situations a humanoid can find itself in. A cheap, quite well made little folder, there are certainly worst things to spend your bucks in.

It's hard to find a negative review of this small multi-tool and it makes you wonder why. Well, let's fix that. Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy!

Features and size

Stripped of many tools the Crucial is what Gerber thinks you'd carry every day. It's missing a file and scissors, which are often used in our experience. Gerber is well known for having had excellent scissors on their multi-tools back in the day when Leatherman had those flimsy folding actuator arms that always slipped when you tried to cut anything but paper. Why Gerber would omit one of their strongest selling points is a mystery to us.

It is smaller than most others and doesn't come with a belt pouch, as it's intended to be carried on a belt clip. Well, if you are a really large person maybe the tool would "disappear" on you, but then you'd probably prefer a bigger tool anyways. It's not really light or slim enough to be carried at the usual pocket mouth position.

quality and ergonomics

Quality-wise let's just say that it's made in China and it shows. Especially the grips feel cheap, have no texture to aid opening the pliers and the finish wears off as soon as you open the package. When closed, there's obvious play between the ends of the handles.

Anything to save the situation, maybe the ergonomics are good? Nope. When you open the knife blade and grip the tool the strap cutter digs into your finger joints. With the strap cutter open it's the back of the knife that bugs you. The pliers (not spring-loaded BTW) only feel OK in the hand with the shorter handle in your palm, but then the jaws point in a weird direction. When orientated better for work, the end of the handle digs into your palm.

verdict

We don't believe anyone at Gerber really carries this tool on a daily basis, because after the first few hours you're ready to ditch it and get something else.

Gerber makes a nice little tool we are willing to sell to you with a straight face: Dime. It's really small enough to be unnoticed, has scissors and spring-loaded pliers. It also costs half as much.

Why the heck do we sell it then?

Gerber stuff generally being good quality, we decided to try this one too. Well, look like you don't hit the mark every time. Do remember that there are worse tools still out there than this.

1] The ergonomics are horrible. You hurt your fingers trying to open the pliers, sometimes.

2] The pliers don't have springs so when you're trying to cut or crimp something, you feel like the ticket conductor on a bus in a third-world country

3] The Blade is half straight, half serrated. So I guess it's good for saving space

4] The blade, the Belt cutter, the Screwdriver, all of them have locks.

5] Well overall I like the tool. It has a Minimalist design, good for everyday carry, but I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone. I sold my previous one to a friend, and later saw it was out of stock at the store I got it from, so I decided to get this one as a substitute.
