Cutting the Skrama 240 knife blade blanks leaves quite a bit of waste material. It can of course be reused but we’ve been pondering for a while, whether the bits could be directly made into something. And, oh boy, yes they can. For example, these great tiny knives.
This knife has been influenced by Japanese kiridashi knives used for all sorts of handicrafts. The upper end of the spine has been ground to a 90-degree angle, so it can be used for striking sparks from ferro rods, making the knife also quite versatile in the wilderness. The rest of the spine is rounded to enable you to use your thumb as a support in precision work.
The knife comes with a black leather sheath that features a hole at the tip, which you can use for hanging the knife from your neck or a hook on the wall. The snap fastener closure ensures that the knife won’t slide out on its own. At the end of the bare tang, there is also a hole for hanging.
Use
This cute little knife has numerous uses, whittling, carving, peeling fruit, cleaning mushrooms, etc. The blade is just a bit under 2", which might or might not make a difference in your neck of woods. When in the wilderness, the neck knife feature enables you to carry this easily wherever you go.
80CRV2 carbon steel
The knife is made from 80CrV2. The "thing" is that this is really nothing fancy or special, just very good tool steel which can take a beating and offers good edge retention. 80CrV2 has over the decades earned a reputation as solid and reliable steel, especially for our purposes.
Strong leather sheath
The sheath leather comes from Pelo Leather, a family-owned Finnish tannery founded in 1897. In addition to producing top-quality sheath and Nappa leathers with a minimized waste of materials and emissions, they are respectful towards the source of the raw materials: the animals as well as the nature in which they live.
The cow hides they use come from local abattoirs that have standards for ensuring the wellbeing of the animals. No animals are raised for the purpose of producing these leathers.
Their business quarter is 25 years and a lot of effort is put into the processes and logistics of the business, to provide a cleaner environment for future generations. We tip our hats at them and are proud to have their leather in our sheaths!
