Snowshoes distribute weight over a large area, keeping the wearer from sinking thigh deep with every step, a great replacement for skis in rough terrain. These are hard wearing US Army surplus, made in Canada. What's best, these are in totally unissued NOS condition!
After the Second World War the US armed forces switched their old, wicker basket-like "Bear paw" snow shoes for these newer magnesium, racquet type ones. These were worn in the snowy Alaskan wilderness and even overseas by some troops participating in military exercises in Norway. Made from magnesium, so if needed you can scrape some flakes off these if you're having trouble starting a fire (yes, this is a real thing). These are extremely well made of magnesium and steel and do not contain plastics or other materials of questionable integrity. Today these would cost at least a hundred bucks more.
The bindings are made of heavy duty Nylon or cotton straps with even more heavy duty buckles. One size fits all, by moving the attachment points of the straps and tightening them you can fit almost any kind and size of shoe in these. For reference on how to attach the straps have a look at the included instructions pampflet and our photos. Feel free to improvise if needed, the most important thing it that your feet stay on the shoe and don't wobble around too much.
Dimensions
- Length 116 cm (45 5/8")
- Width 31 cm (12 1/8")
- Weight around 2 kg (4,4 lbs) for pair, with bindings
Unissued military surplus
These came to us in sealed factory boxes, essentially a time capsule form the 80's! We just paired the shoes and the bindings.

I've yet to see a photo of a WWII Finnish soldier using snowshoes, and that includes Russian, French, German and Norwegian soldiers - even the British - all of whom seem to use skis. Snowshoes are a North American thing - we use skis in Europe. And how did polar bears get into that paragraph? They live in the Arctic: Finland is a sub-arctic country.

I, however, will not be buying a pair. I already have enough time in, thank you very much :)

Kaiken kaikkiaan olen todella tyytyväinen ostokseen. Erinomainen hinta-laatu suhde.

Perfect, as new, condition. Typical fast delivery (even with UK Customs idiocy). Mine arrived with Canadian bindings (no cross the front of the foot strap, and simpler. Two points only woven through the front/sides allowing, in my opinion/experience, for an easier pivot and much simpler donning/doffing) for which I'm grateful. I liked them so much I bought a second pair.
