After the Second World War the US armed forces switched their old, wicker basket-like "Bear paw" snow shoes for these newer magnesium, racquet type ones. These were worn in the snowy Alaskan wilderness and even overseas by some troops participating in military exercises in Norway. Made from magnesium, so if needed you can scrape some flakes off these if you're having trouble starting a fire (yes, this is a real thing). These are extremely well made of magnesium and steel and do not contain plastics or other materials of questionable integrity. Today these would cost at least a hundred bucks more.

The bindings are made of heavy duty Nylon straps with even more heavy duty buckles. One size fits all, by moving the attachment points of the straps and tightening them you can fit almost any kind and size of shoe in these. For reference on how to attach the straps have a look at the included instructions pampflet and our photos. Feel free to improvise if needed, the most important thing it that your feet stay on the shoe and don't wobble around too much.

Dimensions

  • Length 116 cm (45 5/8")
  • Width 31 cm (12 1/8")
  • Weight around 2 kg (4,4 lbs) for pair, with bindings

Unissued military surplus

These came to us in sealed factory boxes, essentially a time capsule form the 80's! We just paired the shoes and the bindings.

Well, the ROTC don't know much about the 1939-40 Winter War. The Finns were successful when they could use use the forests as a defense, allowing encirclement of road-bound Soviet troops, but they won some battles and lost the war once the Russians got their act together.
I've yet to see a photo of a WWII Finnish soldier using snowshoes, and that includes Russian, French, German and Norwegian soldiers - even the British - all of whom seem to use skis. Snowshoes are a North American thing - we use skis in Europe. And how did polar bears get into that paragraph? They live in the Arctic: Finland is a sub-arctic country.

The are pretty much identical to the ones that were used in my time in the Canadian Armed Forces. These are not snowshoes designed for light hiking or having fun in the snow. These are proper, weight bearing snowshoes designed for carrying a heavy load over the snow. I spent many a day trudging through the snow in these and they won't let you down.

I, however, will not be buying a pair. I already have enough time in, thank you very much :)

These are the same snow shoes I was issued in the Canadian Forces in the 90s. They are very well made and will last for ever with proper care. I still use them for hunting in the snow.

Issued these in the CAF. These are much bigger than modern "bear paw" style snowshoes, but these allow for carrying a lot of weight (rucking). Common thing we do with them in the CAF is stringing paracord in the gap from front to back so your boot doesn't slip completely through and get caught on the bottom when going up inclines or slipping.

Ensimmäiset pari kilometriä takana uusilla lumikengillä. On erittäin hyvän tuntuiset kengät.
