Features
The US military sure has awesome knit watch caps! These are made from thick 100% wool and their height is perfect for folding. Unlike your usual military wool clothing, these aren’t made from that coarse cheese grater fiber suited for peeling and rough sex games. Instead they are surprisingly softt. Of course if you want the softest headwear, buy a merino watch cap.
These are available in many colors but there’s only one size. However, the ribbed knit fits virtually any head, even the copywriter’s 60 cm (23.6") noggin. The height is excellent for turning it into a double-layer cap. So, it is very warm.
This is genuine US Government-issue gear made according to the specifications of the DoD, but these ones were never distributed to anyone. If you want to dig a bit more, the NSN number is 8405-01-006-1074.
Care
Dry cleaning is recommended, but you can also hand wash these in lukewarm water with a mild soap. Do not wring or twist! Reshape and dry flat.

I have many, different ones, including the Särmä and the Särmä Alpaca one. This one wins hands down.
Light, warm, tight enough and versatile. Good enough in high winds.
Half point of because you have to be careful not to mess it up on branches or twigs.
(The Dutch watch cap is absolutely terrible in that respect)
The most warm and robust caps are the UK/Dutch "Cap comforters", folding scarf/caps (Mutsdas in Dutch) mostly worn by British Commando units.
It is not like that (very wam and bombproof) but more versatile.
