The ECWCS system should be familiar to anyone who knows a tiny bit about layered clothing and western military apparel. The "Trousers, Extreme Cold Weather" are Gen III and Level 7, designed to be worn over everything else. In such freezing weather, the air is dry so these maximize breathability by omitting the membrane. Note that these are not super-packable and lightweight loft pants but an actual outer garment with strong fabrics all over.
Features
The pants have a 2-way zippered fly with a storm flap, webbing loops for suspenders, and cuff strap attachment points. The waist is elastic and the knees have articulated reinforcements.
Donning and doffing the pants is made very easy with side-zippers. The legs can be split completely open, connected at the top, and closed downwards. For momentary access to lower layers or just ventilation, the zipper can be opened from the top as well.

Standard US Military sizing. The waist and legs have generous clearances for all the clothes you might wear underneath; no need to size up for that.

Packs thick, so good luck if you need a size larger than medium. Compressing the garment too much could deteriorate its warming capabilities.
These also stain very easily and those stains are tough to get out, but you're normally in "frigid wasteland" or whiteout conditions when wearing these.
A bit niche, but if you're in that apocalyptic kind of cold, these are very good choice for your final outside later.

I have never donned them like traditional pants in the 4 years I have used them... I think the way they completely come apart is great for drying them as well. I can tell that the zippers are going to last a very long time. They're very Extra which I have to admit I like. Great to have around just don't eat with them, spills are no fun especially since you rarely have to wash these.
