If there's a country where they've always made very vintage inspired, "Man, Beard & Flannel shirt" kind of stuff, it's Switzerland. This mountain pickaxe is a genuine army issue item with a beautiful ol' leather carrier.

A pickaxe is a handy thing to have when you have to dig into rocky or otherwise hard ground - turn the blade around and you have a chisel-like edge for cutting roots. When there's one guy with a pickaxe and one guy with a shovel, digging foxholes is a breeze! Try it!

You probably don't actually need a pickaxe in your everyday life, but you'll want this as a motivational wall hanger: scaling a mountain is sometimes hard using just your hands.

Made of steel and wood. Length about 50 cm, weight 1,3 kg.

Included is a very, very nice looking leather carrier which also has a handy belt loop to keep the pickaxe at reach all the time.

Genuine Swiss army kit

Old, used, in nice shape overall. However we wouldn't really recommend taking this with you for actual mountain climbing business. The pickaxes and the carriers are usually dirty after decades of storage (the carrier of the pictured example was dated 1943!), so some wiping and greasing will do wonders.

Swiss markings on the sheathe and likely never issued or used! Mine came with OD paint on the head and not a scratch. The only issue was that it was stored for so long that the wood must've dried and shrunk so the head loose and sliding around. Or it was left that way for transport/storage. Who knows, but it was like new and nothing that some banging and linseed oil didn't fix.

I put boot leather Nikwax on the leather sheath and it looks good as new. Really handy tool in the garden.

Glad I didn't hesitate when I ordered this. Like the other comment stated the handle on the one I received was loose, maybe it's meant to be that way. The leather sheath had some mold which I cleaned off and treated it with SofSole Leather Lotion which turned out nice. The steel bit/head was still oiled with no rust and has the number 39 stamped into it and painted black. The sheath is stamped with a Swiss marking on one strap and stamped on another part dated 1940 with something ??Wyttenbach Gerzensee in an oval around the 1940. If this same old batch pops up again I would say do not hesitate.
