  • Comfort -7 °C / 19 °F
  • Water-resistant and windproof shell
  • Weight: 1700 g / 60 oz

Made in the UK.

Features

The Tactical series sleeping bags combine a water-resistant Paratex Steelplate exterior with a luxurious TS1 (Thermal Suede) lining and Reflectatherm fabric which is designed to reflect heat and retain warmth. The construction of the fabrics ensures that any water from the body will be moved to the outside of the bag.

  • No stitch-through construction to reduce the risk of cold spots
  • The internally reinforced foot box allows you to keep your boots on
  • Elasticated drawcord-adjustable hood
  • Insulated shoulder baffle
  • Two-way YKK side zips with insulated baffle behind
  • Anti-snag zipper webbing tape
  • Hanging tabs at the foot end
  • Make a double sleeping bag by zipping together a left and right side model

The cut is suitable for Medium-sized persons and smaller. Trimming excess size makes the bag easier to warm up and reduces the weight on your shoulders during the day. If this sounds constricting, check out the more roomy Carinthia Defence 4 instead.

Materials and care

Snugpak sleeping bags can be washed in a front-loading washing machine at 30 °C with the delicate program. Snugpak recommends low or fragrance-free powders or special cleaners for waterproof textiles, such as Nikwax Tech Wash. Do not tumble dry and do not store compressed.

The performance of a sleeping bag degrades when it's dirty but also with each wash: consider using a sleeping bag liner to avoid washing for as long as possible.

Outer Fabric: Paratex Steelplate

Paratex Steelplate is used on the premium Snugpak models. It's a tough and lightweight 100% Nylon fabric with a breathability of 12 liters / 1 m2 / 24 hours. Being windproof and Durable Water Repellent, it shields your body from the elements when you are not using a tent.

Inner Fabric: Thermal Suede One

Thermal Suede One (TS1) is a lightweight polyester fabric with a suede finish, which uses a combination of yarns with different thicknesses. Microfibre yarns (less than 1 dtex) go on the outside, and Macrofibre (3 dtex) go on the inside. The construction exploits a basic physical property – that water will always move from a low to high surface area or from the macro to microfilament yarns, thus moving water from the body outwards.

Inner Fabric 2: Reflectatherm

Reflectatherm is a metallized 100% Polyester fabric. It is specially coated with metallic dots to retain and reflect heat with an excellent weight-to-warmth ratio. The coating does not affect breathability and is undetectable by touch.

Insulation: Softie Premier

Softie Premier is created from staple yarns that mirror the compositions of natural insulation as opposed to continuously extruded as in most synthetic fills. A variety of yarn processes are applied to give a more random effect i.e. some are curled, some crimped, and some are just left as they are. This randomness creates extra voids and loft to trap more warm air whilst keeping the same weight as a standard insulation. Made in Switzerland!

The temperature ratings are Snugpak's own and may not be comparable to other brands. The Comfort figures seem conservative, which means you don't need to buy "warmer than you need" with Snugpak. The Extreme ratings are temperatures in which the sleeping bags have been used by fit individuals with the minimum of discomfort. When in doubt, use the comfort figure as guidance.

Made by Snugpak

Founded in the UK in the '70s, Snugpak took its name from the two things they mind: being able to pack and carry warm stuff. During the decades, Snugpak has developed manufacturing processes and synthetic fills to improve further the ratio of insulation to pack size and/or weight. Due to special consideration of military users since 1990, a certain peculiarity can be seen in some details, and selected products are still made on the home island.

Short review: Great Bag so far (about 12 nights of winter use). Comfy interior fabric, decent weight and packsize, warm. Slightly annyoing zipper, and drawstring for collar and hood sometimes dangle in your face.

Rambling review:
I bought this to replace my aging Carinthia Defence 4. Despite the many rave reviews of that bag, I never fully warmed up to it, quite literally, in the few years I've used and abused it.

My main complaints were: No shoulder baffle/collar. Because of this, I often felt like all the warm air was escaping through the "breathing hole" when moving.
Way too roomy for 95% of people. I am 1,78m, 87kg and very broad around the shoulders. To me the bag felt like a cave, and like I had to warm up a lot of air that was just unnecessary.
All in all it felt not much wamer than the much lighter and smaller Defence 1 (which is great).

The Snugpak fixes both of the Defence 4s main issues. To me it actually felt warmer than the Defence 4, granted I only tested it down to around -5C so far (which is why I rate it only at 4.5, because I don't know if the temp ratings are fully accurate for me. But I feel like it is very warm.)

It is cut much tighter than the Carinthia bag, thus reducing weight and packsize and making it easier to get and stay warm. At the same time the bag does not feel constricting to me, I can still move around and lay my arms next to my torso.
If you want to lay in your bag with full plate carrier loadout and uniform, or if you are a truly mighty specimen, get the Carinthia. If you are somewhat normally sized, this is more efficient.

The TS1 liner fabric just feels cozy as hell and is instantly warm. However, it picks up little leaves and needles when you are not careful, and they are sometimes harder to remove than from the slick nylon of the Carinthia.
Also, while I understand the thought of reinforcing the footbox for sleeping in boots, it means that, when not wearing footwear, your feet are not surrounded by the soft TS1 liner, but by smooth nylon fabric, which feels colder to my feet.

The Snugpaks main drawback is its zipper. It can be fiddly to close and catch on the outer fabric, which luckily seems to be pretty tough so far.
Getting in and out of the Defence 4 was probably the best part about the whole bag. But a side zip is more thermally efficient, so it comes down to preference again.

The compression bag from Carinthia is miles ahead. But that is not so much of an issue to me.

In conclusion: this is a great bag at a great price, with some features that make it worth it to me over the benchmark.
