A medium-sized six-liter backpack side pouch with rudimentary internal organization and external compression strap loops. Durable high-quality stuff.

  • Capacity c. 6 liters
  • Covered zipper closure
  • Front vertical webbing loops for compression straps
  • Internal D-ring for securing small gear
  • Internal flat rear compartment
  • Reinforced bottom and sides
  • PALS compatible attachment system
  • Water drainage grommet at the bottom
  • 5-year material and workmanship warranty
  • Made in Finland/Estonia

Features

This is nothing too fancy, but just what you need from a side pouch on your backpack. The zipper is covered to protect it from water, abrasion, and dirt. The vertical webbing on the front keeps the compression straps of your backpack neatly in place over the pouch. This also enables the straps to compress the pouch properly. They can also be used as attachment points for bungee cords, carabiners, and stuff like that.

A 25 mm webbing loop and a D-ring on top of the rear interior wall allow you to secure small and important stuff. The flat rear compartment offers rudimentary organization for smaller stuff. A grommet at the bottom removes any water that may seep into the pouch.

PALS attachment

On the backside, you have the standard Savotta PALS attachment webbing system with tuck tabs. However, the middlemost horizontal webbing rows were eliminated as they didn’t really do anything besides adding weight.

There is a c. 9 cm (3.5") gap between the two vertical attachment straps. It enables you to carry axes, fishing poles, etc. stuffed down behind the pouch.

Optimal attachment requires a width of four channels and a height of six (min. five) rows of PALS webbing. When tightened down, your pack's side compression straps will eliminate any movement of the pouch and its contents.

The 6 L side pouch fits all Savotta Jääkäri series packs. On packs with less than six rows of PALS webbing on the sides, the bottom of the pouch will "hang". You can let the side compression straps take care of that, or you can choose to attach the pouch one step higher up on the side of the pack.

Sizing

Weight: 240 g (8.5 oz). Measurements: 17 x 35 x 9 cm (6.7" x 13.8" x 3.5").

Use

With a capacity of six liters, this is a medium size pouch, not small, not huge. Something you would expect to see on a 30-80-liter backpack. Below there are some examples of what you can fit in one of these.

  • Large tarp and accessories
  • Hammock and an underquilt
  • Lightweight puffy jacket and pants or rainwear
  • Two regular 1.5-liter beverage bottles
  • Trangia 27-series stove, fuel, and some stuff to cook
  • Jetboil stove, a gas cartridge, water, and some stuff to cook
  • 24h worth of rations and snacks

Materials

Fabric: durable 500D Cordura (100% polyamide). The bottom and bottom halves of the sides are lined with 210D polyamide for added abrasion resistance. Webbing: 100% polyester.

Fits the RP80's PALS footprint perfectly without being so long it interferes with the elastic pouches below them. The horizontal PALS on the pouches keeps the compression straps in place.

You can fit a total of five. I put on four so as to leave the rearmost section (between the compression strap tension locks) open for strapping things down to.

A flap type lid would be better overall for keeping the inside clean and dry and I'd prefer buckle closure to zippers, but the zippers are of good quality. Without the flap top they stay very nice and low profile when empty and cinched down with the compression straps, while the flap topped pouches I used before would still look very floppy and messy.

Solid gear, if a little pricey. Put these on Jaakari M pack to hold extra gear, and I much prefer these to the 4L pouches. I'll probably never part with them until I shuffle off my mortal coil, so I bought quality. Savotta makes good gear.

Sopii hyvin jääkäri M:n kylkeen vaikka mollet ei ihan riitäkkään, repun sivuhihnat pitää taskun alaosan paikallaan.
