Särmä TST Woolshell trousers
We've played around with many wool-based outdoor and military clothes over the years, the Woolshell suit is a completely re-thought design based on experiences and ideas gathered from numerous projects. Functionally these are much like a pair of modern tactical trousers. Combining this functionality with high-quality natural wool fabrics makes these a rather unique garment!
Wool? As in old timey clothes?
Yes, but high-quality wool, not at all scratchy and nasty. Wool is really a top-quality material:
- Breathes, doesn't feel like plastic
- Won't soil easily, but cleans up nicely
- Is naturally fire retardant
- Forms on its wearer
- Relatively warm even if it gets moist, but won't really soak in water.
Good wool frieze is expensive and has some heft to it, that's why it's not nowadays used so much. It's still more than a viable application for temperate and cold weather clothing articles.
Modern, functional design
- Regular fit
- Elastic adjustable waist
- Zipper fly with button
- 50 mm belt loops
- Diamond gusset crotch
- Articulated knees
- Reinforced seat, knees, shins and ankles
- Hook-and-loop cuffs
- Four pockets:
- Two slash side pockets
- Two pleated cargo pockets
- Wool frieze: 70/20/10 % wool/polyamide/Cashmere
- Reinforcements: 50/50 % cotton/polyester
- Pocket lining: 100 % polyester
The original idea for the Woolshell design began as a simple fantasy - wouldn't it be great to have a wool suit which could comfortably be worn under gear and shell garments without causing too much excess bulk? Basically this would be a garment that could alternate between shell and mid-layer functions, with the fantastic properties of wool being the main attraction. This idea matured over the years and eventually ended up as an update for our legacy wool jackets and pants, tying these together with the current Särmä TST clothing system designs.
Besides the wool and it's naturally fantastic properties the other big thing about the Woolshell trousers is the design. The overall construction is aimed at minimizing the bulk of the wool fabric used, therefore certain areas such as the crotch gusset, ankles and waist are made with double layers of CO/PES instead of any wool. By limiting excess wool-on-wool details, the result is a little bit more lightweight and sleek. The low profile reinforcements and intricately pleated cargo pockets help keep the overall profile low without sacrificing any functionality.
Sizing and fit
Sized according to recommended user height and waist circumference. The cut is a regular fit and accommodates Level 2 longjohns underneath. The waist is adjustable with a strong elastic webbing piece with hook-and-loop fasteners on the sides. This webbing piece can also be completely removed if not needed.
High quality European wool frieze
70% wool, 20% polyamide and 10% Cashmere wool (!), 600 g/m2. The polyamide content is added to the mix to reinforce the otherwise not-so-wear-resistant natural wool, thus extending the life of the finished garment. Wool is an incredible material for outdoor clothing, keeps you warm, dry and breathes better than anything. We're proud to say that this wool frieze is the best we could get our hands-on. If you're going to make wool clothing, you better do it properly!
50% polyester, 50% cotton, ripstop reinforced. Receptive to fabric wax, by the way!
Effective now, the grey ones have ink-coloured reinforcements, as pictured.
Wash and care
As these are made of wool, they don't need to be washed very often - the best way to keep wool clothing clean is to simply brush off any dirt and if necessary wipe it with a wet cloth. If you must, machine-wash at 30-40 degrees Celsius with wool cycle. Hang to dry. When drying, stretch the garment a bit to open up the fibres again. Use of wool care products recommended!

Cut nice and high at the back good crotch to facilitate bending and squatting great touch the rear adjuster for perfect waist fit. pockets are spot on. Hell the whole construction is up there better than any other outdoor trousers and best of all made of wool.
Delivery to the UK was hassle free.
So good I ordered a second pair.
How can Varusteleka produce what no one else seems to be able to do Keep it up guys

When you look at the pictures on the website you get the impression that the fit is fairly slim. In reality the model must have sized down considerably because the fit is rather baggy. That is good news if you have a fat ass or legs like Arnold Swarzenegger. For me (normally build) they could have been a bit tighter. For this kind of cold weather pants I often want to use overtrousers (waterproof, snow or thermal trousers). This would’ve been easier if they were less baggy.
The inseam on my “regular” pant is 79 cm. This is good. If you follow the recommended user length the risk of the trousers being to short is very low.
Possible weak spots:
These trouser aren’t cheap and they are intended for heavy use so you expect them to be durable. The trousers legs are both wide and long so you could expect some wear on the inside of the legs. I would appreciate an even more robust design with cordurareinforcement on the inside and end of the legs. I think the current design is a bit flimsy.
I would also appreciate boot hooks. .
In conclusion, the best wool trousers I’ve tried. They are a bit baggy but the design is otherwise brilliant and extremely comfortable. I hope they will last because I will use them a lot.

Leikkaus on liki täydellinen, ei hierrä eikä kierrä, pääsee kyykkyyn ja ylös ilman ongelmia eikä tästä huolimattakaan nämä ole kuitenkaan mitkään pussihousut.
Puoli tähteä nipistin pois, koska mielestäni näin korkealla vyötäröllä varustetut housut saisi varustaa olkaimien kiinnitys mahdollisuudella, joko napit tai lenkit.

These pants are not made for very hot conditions, but even on a hike in humid conditions way beyond the 30-degree-mark (Celsius), they have been comfortable to wear.

My only wish for an update: knee-pad slots (the jacket has elbow pad slots) and boot hooks.
Keep up the great work!
