We have made all sorts of cool stuff from merino wool but a traditional knitted sweater has been missing. Not anymore! Särmä Merino Wool Sweater is a timeless classic made purely from natural fibers. It caresses you lovingly both in the city and in the forest. Now available in dark grey but who knows whether other colors will emerge at some point.
Mulesing-free Merino wool
This merino wool pullover is made of 100% merino wool. All of our merino wool clothes and accessories are made of mulesing-free merino wool. This is very nice. You wouldn’t want your ass to be cut open either. You can use these with a good conscience.
Wool is super. Merino wool is even better; it does not itch, it insulates and regulates temperature better, and gathers even less nasty smells (and most smells vanish with simply airing out the garment). Of course, the catch is a bit higher price tag, but it is truly worth it. And considering that these are made in Finland, the price isn’t that bad at all.
Sizing
First you get the simple size and then the recommended chest size of the wearer. Wool stretches so this isn’t microscopic precision stuff. By changing the size, you can make this relaxed and loose or hipster snug.
Made in Finland
This merino sweater is designed and made in Finland by Top-Knit Oy. The company has been making high-quality knitted garments since 1974. The yarn was made in Italy using Merino wool that came from South America.

First, the good. I think the reviewer from Sweden who thinks the wool is not merino is incorrect - this is super soft and not scratch/itchy in any way and I am usually somewhat irritated by non-merino wool and can wear this with a T shirt with no issues. Second, it is knitted "in the round" so to speak so there are no obvious seams along the side or where the sleeves join the body, unlike a lot of cheaper sweaters that are knitted in sheets and then sewn together.
Neutral. The sleeves and body are longish - this is not good or bad, just something to think about. The cuffs and waistband are also not knitted tighter, such as in a standard wooly pully or the Swiss sweaters - instead there is elastic around the edge to gather it in.
Not so great. I am wondering if there may be a sizing issue. I am a solid medium with a 172 cm height and a 99-101 cm chest (5'8" and 40"). The medium regular sweater I bought fits *very* large, with the sleeves able to go almost over the tips of my fingers, and the chest measurement under the armpits when taken flat is 58 cm (23"). This means the sweater fits pretty loosely on my frame. That being said, the cut is ok so it is still wearable. I subsequently purchased a small regular in the hopes of a better fit. This one just arrived and it is definitely better, with a fairly snug fit on my frame - it is 48 cm (19") across the chest under the armpits, giving a fit similar to the size 100 wooly pully. Based on the size of the medium-regular, however, I was expecting something more in the 53 cm (21") range.
It would be great if Varusteleka would list the actual sweater measurements, not just the interpolated sizes.
All of this aside It is a great sweater. I would give it a 5/5 if it wasn't for the sizing.

Having worn the sweater almost non stop on two weeks worth of winter hikes, I love it. It will mostly be passed down generations of my future grand-grand children.
Not a love at first sight but now it would be the first item to grab from when the nearby Nuclear Power Plant explodes ;).

Update: Winter has kicked in and I got my sweater out again. I just love the thing: it's so warm for how light it is.

Warm enough for about -5 °C with only a shell above, yet it regulates body temperature enough to be also comfortable when sitting in the library all day.
It's also surprisingly light, which is nice, because that way I can always have it in my Backpack as an extra layer, when the German Regional Rail system forces me to stand at some backcountry station for 2 hours in wind and rain…
However, it should be noted that the sweater is quite long, which is sometimes nice and other times annoying.
This also results in looking somewhat baggy around the hips for me.
