Product description

The Romanian army rucksack was already vintage-inspired when it came out in some '70s. Today it will cause spontaneous soiling of the pants among the vintage/retro fanatics, including us.

First off, YES, these are made of thick canvas and even thicker leather, all cobbled together with strong thread and steel rivets. With a volume of about 40 liters / 2450 in3, this pack should serve you well during longer journeys as well. In some cases, parts of the pack may have been replaced with newer ones. It's still far from a modern nylon contraption.

Features

A piece of art on its own right, the Romanian pack is well made and seems bombproof. Let's see what kind of secrets it holds.

Inside

From the inside this is a simple thing: it has one large main space closed with a piece of string. Dimensions from seam to seam about 30-35 x 40 x 26 cm / (12" - 14" x 15.5" x 10"). The pack is wider from the bottom than on the top.

The main space is covered by a large lid closed with a traditional one-prong buckle system. You can punch in more holes to the strap if needed.

External features

The lid has leather attachment points probably for a mess kit and that large, interesting looking piece is for a spade (our best guess). On the sides, you'll find attachment points for a blanket/tarp roll and on the other side, there's a handy little pouch for a bottle of booze or a canteen.

All the corners are reinforced with leather. Certainly, this is a thing born out of love.

Carrying system

Anyone familiar with the German WW2 gear will instantly recognize the carrying system, and those who aren't might have to stop for a while and think. We'll make it easy: the slim straps with the loops are supposed to be attached to the hooks on the bottom of the pack. The wide straps with the hooks are meant to be anchored on the combat belt kit.

Yes, the straps will easily slide out of the hooks. This feature is good for military use when you have to discard the pack fast, but not so convenient in civilian life. The simplest hack is to slam the hooks "shut" so the loops won't slide out. Another trick is to cut off the slim straps at their base and just attach the hooked straps together any way you wish. This looks neater, but we will leave the historical integrity aspects to the reader.

Echoes from the past

This ol' thing certainly has very strong vibes from the era of the Tornister type packs which were small and difficult to use. Although this is not one of them, it looks kinda similar. We found manufacturing dates from the 70s and 80s, which truly is a small wonder, as the appearance would place the design to the 50s or something. Well done, Romania!

Anyway, if you're after a proper usable vintage pack, this is your ticket!

Condition

Usually very little used, but old. We strongly recommend wiping the pack clean with a moist rag and treating the leather with generous amounts of grease. The musty warehouse smell will eventually vanish with use.

It's old, worn, history, functional, and in need of service. I'm giving this 5 stars despite the leather being dried to hell and having two cracks and the canvas having a few stains. Because it's still a good backpack and it's cool as well. I've had to feed it a lot of leather oil and wash the canvas, also the string for closing the bag i replace with 550 cord. But I like this bag because it's big on the inside and visually it's cool and has a lot of character and only gains more with anything i need to fix. So for a casual bag i wear to the store and hang in my room, it's perfect

Edit - MAR.2024 - One of the leather pieces on the pack that holds the lower shoulder strap buckle, ripped. Varusteleka provided excellent customer service and offered a refund or replacement at no additional cost to me. I have a replacement pack and am very happy with it. They just made me a regular customer from here on out. Great company with great products!! I received my Romanian pack quickly with no troubles or delays, even with the international shipping. The pack was as described and even included additional straps with friction buckles for securing a bedroll to the tabs sewn to the sides of the pack. The condition is pretty good although I noticed that the two holes in the big leather reinforcement patch inside, where the drawstring is supposed to anchor, have a cut in between them. This prevents me from using the drawstring as intended, but I'm going to pop in a grommet to resolve this. The drawstring itself was also frayed, so I replaced it with some sash cord and fixed it right up. The leather itself is very thick and stiff and should prove very durable. My pack definitely shows signs of use, but is in very good shape overall. It came somewhat dirty and the leather was very dry, but a quick wash with some soapy water and a brush took care of the most visible crustiness. There was definite mold growing on multiple pieces of leather, so do give your pack a thorough cleaning. After cleaning and air drying in the sun, I put the pack in the bathroom for a few days so it could absorb some humidity and soften the leather, then I applied some Neatsfoot oil to seal and protect it. The only downsides I found were that several pieces of metal hardware like buckles, grommets and friction slides had rust on them because the paint was gone. The rivets that help anchor the shoulder straps are also very rusty and in bad shape. I'm surprised they used steel for them, but I'll have to replace them with some brass rivets. They are holding though, and the need to replace is mainly so I don't get rust stains on my shirts. Pack still gets 5-stars though. This is surplus so you're gonna have to deal with some crustiness, and this pack is begging to be modified with cool stuff to make it useful today. A good wash, some new paracord for the drawstring, a little oil to protect the leather and maybe some wax to waterproof the fabric if you live where it rains. This thing is awesome, and it's worth twice what they're selling it for. If it had a Timbuk2 label, it would be $250.

Very nice! Mine came with the helmet straps as well as nylon straps on the sides. It is reinforced at the corners with an extra layer of canvas rather than leather. I applied generous amounts of mink oil to the leather and that softened it a lot. No complaints from me! Edit: 1 year in and this is my go-to pack! the leather straps are kinda uncomfortable, but I'll probably make some shoulder pads to remedy that. The leather, depite being dry in the beginning, has held up really well due to me treating it vigorously with mink oil. This was my school pack for a year, and held up really well to the 30-40 pounds of crap I put in it. The only signs of wear are some minor scuffs on the bottom which I will fix by sewing a new layer of reinforcing canvas in the bottom. This pack is also really good for travel! it has a pretty large capacity, and the closing flap is adjustable so you can roll blankets and secure them under the flap. The helmet traps are useful for hanging a pair of shoes or sandals off the outside of the bag. Also, people really love this bag! I always get compliments on it. If you're a leather and canvas fanboy like me, this bag is a solid choice whether it's for travelling or for day pack needs.
