Hungarian M49 shelter half, surplus
Just when you thought all ancient Cold War era stockpiles had been depleted we got a lot of old shelter halves. This Hungarian model is actually quite fancy, with two armholes, a proper drawcord hood, and everything! Can be used as a small single man shelter or rain cape and by buttoning two or more of these together you can build all sorts of bigger tent-like structures.

A note about the newest lot: these have a strong musty odor. First, air it out very thoroughly. Then, use it to slowly get rid of the smell. If you thought about machine washing this, think again - the smell might take on other garments as well, or even the machine itself.
The material is proper old timey tent canvas, probably 100% cotton.
Used military surplus
These have probably seen decades of field use which shows: small holes and repairs are common, even some eyelets may be missing. Still, for the price, these are pretty good, and with a little patching up and waterproofing, these can easily be restored to their former glory. Lastly we would like to remind again about the strong smell.

Tough canvas, mine was very new, had a little rust on some of the grommet but was most likely from warehouse storage or something. Otherwise looks in perfect unused condition on both halves I received.
A little tight but actually not a problem at all for laying down in two halfs buttoned together. A one half is actually the box end used for the foot (or the head, either which you lay out sleeping position) end of your lay spot. So a single half you might be able to curl yourself up like a question mark to lay in. Two halves buttoned you can totally stretch out to sleep.
Rolls up nicely to strap around the outside of my 35L backpack. Very solid as a poncho, excellent camo. I could probaly make a toggle skirt to tie in around the bottom to raise the height but this tent design is perfect once you use it a few times and get a feel for its simplicity.

Arrived in like-new condition. A few grommets were replaced with brass ones.
Dye is faded a bit, so it now looks more suited for fall foliage.
Works as it should, but I will re-wax it anyways.

Took them outside and opened the package. Definitely used but everything was there and only 1 small hole which I quickly patched up with some patch tape.
Neat setup and now I know why there are so many pegs in the Hungarian tent pole set I got a couple of years ago from Varusteleka.
I fastened the halves together and set it up in about 15 minutes. I am 6' even and I had plenty of room to stretch out.
The camo pattern is pretty simple but should work okay where I go camping.
May buy another set just because.
Have not tried them as ponchos yet but will as soon as they air out for a while.
Which brings me to the truth in advertising point here. When Varusteleka says these are musty, no truer words have been spoken within the last decade. I actually whiffed them when I walked into the house. I didn't know they had arrived but they announced themselves almost immediately. Through the packaging, mind you.
Definitely worth the money and would like to order a couple more for my kids to play around in. In the meantime I will keep these set up in the back yard for a while to let them air out and then wax them.
