This is a rather archetypal example of a classic bomber jacket with a less puffy and shiny look compared to American models. Still, you have the ribbed cuffs and hem, slanted front pockets, and zippered front as a bomber should. The hem is short so pull up your pants!

The collar on this one is a tab type and the shoulders have epaulets for a rather "officially stylish" look. It probably goes together rather well with a red scarf.

To protect you from cold weather and allow using the jacket in intermediate weather as well, the liner vest is removable.

Size info

First up is the max recommended chest girth, then an approximate length group. The fit is not loose nor tight but just right and allows for a woolly pully.

The correct length group varies depending on the fit (the shoulder seams and sleeves, in general, sit lower when the jacket is looser) and personal proportions. However, here's a rough guidance:

SizeUser length (SI)User length (US)
Short / M<176 cm<5' 9"
Regular176-182 cm5' 9" - 5' 11"
Long182-188 cm5' 11" - 6' 2"
X-Long>188 cm>6' 2"

Based on our comparisons, the lengths S and M are about the same. (You would be forgiven for thinking M and R are interchangeable.) S stands for Short, of course, but we couldn't figure out the word that refers to a short person and begins with the letter M. Anyway, this is what we found out.

To quickly convert the chest sizes to inches, here's a handy table:

CentimetersInches
92 cm36"
96 cm38"
101 cm40"
107 cm42"
112 cm44"
117 cm46"
122 cm48"
127 cm50"

British surplus

The jackets are used but obviously not by infantrymen in combat exercises. All is good and proper!

I can't recommend these enough. I wore mine for 8 years from basic training and it honestly was the most versatile clothing I was issued. The liner comes in handy in winter and does a great job of adding some effective, but not too bulky, insulation. Getting fat towards the end of my military career made the liner slightly redundant though I guess, don't need a liner with a layer of seal fat round your mid riff.

Like the description says they can be a bit short, since you are meant to have your pants pulled up high and the jacket is meant to sit high and sort of like bloused out. The zip can be stiff at first but ironing the inside of it can sort that out. I suggest lower heat if ironing this jacket and iron from the inside with high steam, because unfortunately they crease very easily and if you dont wash them regular and treat them nice you will get disgusting smooth dirt patches and people will you know from a distance you are filthy civvie or even worse, an air cadet.

These run on the small side, take care when choosing your size. Normally I wear a 50 Regular jacket, sometimes a 52. I ordered the 101R here and it is very tight across the chest. Not much room to move. A 107R would have been better and the 112R if you wan to wear a sweater under it. The quality and condition are good, quite well made.

Nice: It came with rank slides on the epaullettes; Senior Aircraftman.
Not so nice: It also came with the sweaty odour of said Aircraftman.

Mine came with rank slides on the shoulder straps, not bad. Unfortunately it also came with some sweat stains, especially on the collar, and the lining of the jacket itself was torn in the armholes and both pockets. I bet it was too tight for the original wearer, which is also is for me. I ordered size 117 regular for a 116cm chest measurement, and it's quite tight and a bit short, so these definitely run small.

The quality of the fabric and workmanship is very high, though. I may just try my chances and order again, one or two sizes up. If you get a gem at this price, you may just have a jacket for life.

Edit: I took my chances and ordered a 127 long and it's basically the perfect size for me, certainly shouldn't be any smaller. So definitely consider sizing up, maybe even two sizes up. This one came in very nice condition, it even smelled recently washed. +1 star for this one, as always surplus is a bit of a gamble, I got a real nice one this time.

Mine had its zipper pull missing and a strong tobacco smell. Otherwise it is a good jacket, a bit on the small side though

I purchased this jacket recently and am very pleased with it. It looks good, fits well, and is in good shape. However, it should be noted that this is a light to mid-weight jacket. It's definitely more than a windbreaker, but it is not a heavy weight jacket for cold weather and certainly not extreme cold. The liner is in essence a vest and does not extend down the sleeves. When walking this evening, I could feel cold through the sleeves, and, with my hands in the pockets, I could feel cold coming through the front of the jacket. The pockets of course are outside of the liner. It's not particularly cold tonight, about 12 C (54 F). For colder weather, one would most likely need either a sweater underneath or a shell over top -- or both if it's quite cold. The liner works well; my core was quite warm, and I could feel no cold coming through.

These are a bit more slim cut than most bomber jackets. That aside, I am able to incorporate it as something semi-formal with the collar and fairly neutral colour. My jacket did not come with any indications of rank (which for my purposes is good) and seemed pretty pristine, aside from one stray thread (not really an issue). Unlike some of the other reviewers, I did not notice any smell on my item. Great for indoor wear, I haven't had the chance to wear it outside yet.

Edit: It's quite nice outside, it doesn't get too warm in the sun and keeps the wind off well.
