Have you always wanted a thermal cloak but been scared off by the price? Military surplus can help you with that. This is an excellent choice for e.g. deer hunting or nature photography when it is Finland cold. Also works as a sleeping bag or when you want to cheat in burlap sack racing. The storage bag isn’t included. So cheap that it hurts.

Use

In addition to the regular zipper, these have zippered openings for arms and feet. The ideal use for this poor man’s Jerven is cold weather hunting. Pull this on top of your regular hunting clothes and you can sit still and wait for game no matter how cold it is. You should practice it in advance though so that you can make sure the zippers don't interfere with shooting. If you want to improve usability, sew some sort of loops on the sides so that you can attach the bottom straps to them. This way you can move from one spot to another without tripping on the hem.

These are also suitable for wintery nature photographers or pretty much anything where you need to sit still for extended periods of time in very cold weather. You can of course also use this as a regular sleeping bag, just remember it isn’t a Finnish winter sleeping bag, so better used as a three-season bag.

If you want to protect the inside of the sleeping bag, use a sleeping bag liner. For example, the Austrian one but also others work.

Condition

Austrian military surplus. Used but washed and in serviceable condition. These can be patched up, so they aren’t as good as new but very nice for their price.

This bag does what it should do really well and not much more. You can wear it well as a thermal cloak and also does its duty as a sleeping bag (as shown on the packaging). It will probably need an extra liner for the winter months (even in warmer climates than Finland), but you can absolutely use it in the summer. Packs down well into the "Austrian Compression Bag, Surplus".<br /> These are old and surplus, so there is some wear and tear visible, but there was nothing on my item, that would make it unusable.

Arrived in remarkable condition, some loose threads and a scent of long term storage that just reminds me of my time in the scouts - otherwise this bag which seems to have been issued in 1984 could have been brand new. It's on the heavy side but warm and comfortable and for that price I have no complaints. Have only used it as an outer to my swagman and as a blanket but I am very pleased.

The bag is durable, as comfortable as it can be, and doubles as a thermal cloak (you can tie the compression straps into a "belt," which doubles the material on your thighs and hips, allowing your legs to do the pesky walking motion needed around camp). Being surplus, some issues are to be expected; mine had a broken zipper (wouldn't close or open completely). However, the customer service was fantastic. With just one email, they quickly arranged a replacement, which arrived rather soon, and I got to keep the original bag. Maybe someday I'll get the zipper fixed and gift it to someone, possibly make it into an improvised hammock underquilt. Good product and even better service—highly recommend!
