U.S. Army Green Berets were the first ones to use boonie hats in Vietnam. And since that boonie hat has been used in tropical conditions and later they have also been called as sun or hot weather hats.

There's a fun story related to the origin of the term 'Boonie': That's an abbreviated form of the word 'boondocks,' which is originally American military slang. The word comes from the Tagalog language word 'bundók' and translates as 'mountain'. It's was originated in the Philippine-American war, where they apparently used hats that reminded the "boonie hats" that were brought to Vietnam. The word bundók is also referring to a rural inland area, which is mountainous and difficult to access and advance through. Maybe that reference had something to do when they named them boonie hats since the climate in Vietnam prefers rampant ground which is hard to advance through.
