Gone are the good old days when the USMC gear was categorically worse than anything the Army had. Now it's all professional and actually fit for use, like these used Therm-A-Rest sleeping mats. Disappointed, dear reader? So are we, so are we...
Features
This is the right and proper closed cell foam accordion style sleeping pad called the Improved Sleeping Mat. (ISM) They probably had sandpaper before. In addition to being sturdy as hell, these are Coyote Brown in color unlike those neon horrors sold everywhere. At the other end, there's a pair of cemented elastic cords to keep your mat in a neat package when carried. They're also great for hanging the mat to dry or cross the Atlantic with it, or what the hell the Marines do anyway.
Dimensions, weight, and R-value
- Dimensions laid out: 185 x 59 cm (72.8" x 23")
- Dimensions packed: 59 x 13 cm (23 " x 5.1" )
- Thickness: 6.5 mm (0.25")
- Weight: c. 530 grams (1.2 lbs)
Oh the R-value? Well the USMC probably hasn't even heard of those things, but we guess this is a pretty solid three season pad. However, it is pretty thin, so when it gets freezing cold, you might wanna pair this with an inflatable one.
If only hard data will do: NSN 8465-01-606-8756
Condition
Genuine USMC surplus. Used but in good serviceable condition. Some of these might have the rubber bands that hold the folded pad together detached like in the pics. But they are still usable that way, too. A closed cell pad is difficult to destroy, so these will serve many a night before they're gone. Do expect some traces of use though, these are not new. Generally speaking American surplus is a good investment, being warproof gear made usually in the USA.

This mat folding into a nice rectangle and not having crazy bumps on it keep all the dirt and junk from getting into the pad like others on the civilian market. The downside is that this feels like an upgrade from a few layers of folded cardboard. It will NOT be like an inflatable, but is damn fine at keeping you insulated and will survive being scratched up from gear or rocky terrain. It doesnt get soaked, it is very easy to clean, especially if something does manage to grow on it.
Best practices for this is to stick it in the bivy/waterproof bag, before your actual sleeping bag. If your bags are too thin, it may fight you due to the more rigid shape. If you need the bags to be mummy shape, this may interfere with the bag(s) performance, but not by much.
Square foldable mat outclasses the roll-up foam mats!
