A large eight-liter backpack side pouch with rudimentary internal organization and external compression strap loops. Durable high-quality stuff.

  • Capacity c. 8 liters
  • Covered zipper closure
  • Front vertical webbing loops for compression straps
  • Internal D-ring for securing small gear
  • Internal flat rear compartment
  • Reinforced bottom and sides
  • PALS compatible attachment system
  • Water drainage grommet at the bottom
  • 5-year material and workmanship warranty
  • Made in Finland/Estonia

Features

This is nothing too fancy, but just what you need from a side pouch on your backpack. The zipper is covered to protect it from water, abrasion, and dirt. The vertical webbing on the front keeps the compression straps of your backpack neatly in place over the pouch. This also enables the straps to compress the pouch properly. They can also be used as attachment points for bungee cords, carabiners, and stuff like that.

A 25 mm webbing loop and a D-ring on top of the rear interior wall allow you to secure small and important stuff. The flat rear compartment offers rudimentary organization for smaller stuff. A grommet at the bottom removes any water that may seep into the pouch.

PALS attachment

On the backside, you have the standard Savotta PALS attachment webbing system with tuck tabs. However, the middlemost horizontal webbing rows were eliminated as they didn’t really do anything besides adding weight. There is a c. 9 cm (3.5") gap between the two vertical attachment straps. It enables you to carry axes, fishing poles, etc. stuffed down behind the pouch.

Optimal attachment requires a width of four channels and a height of seven (min. six) rows of PALS webbing. When tightened down, your pack's side compression straps will eliminate any movement of the pouch and its contents

Savotta recommends the 8 L side pouch to be used only on the Jääkäri XL. Although not recommended, you can attach it to smaller packs with an absolute minimum of five rows of PALS webbing on the sides (Jääkäri M and L, for example). This is done by attaching the pouch one step higher and accepting that the bottom will be a bit floppy.

Sizing

Weight: 270 g (9.5 oz). Measurements: 17 x 40 x 11 cm (6.7" x 15.7" x 4.3")..

Use

With a capacity of eight liters, this clearly is a large pouch. Probably best used on large and tall backpacks of 60-100+ liters. Below there are some examples of what you can fit in one of these.

  • Large tarp, hammock, and accessories
  • Hammock and an underquilt
  • Lightweight puffy jacket and pants or rainwear
  • Two regular 1.5-liter beverage bottles
  • Trangia 27-series stove, fuel, and lots of stuff to cook
  • Jetboil stove, a gas cartridge, water, and lots of stuff to cook
  • Nearly a week's worth of spare underwear, mid-layers, and socks
  • Over 24h worth of rations and snacks

Materials

Fabric: durable 500D Cordura (100% polyamide). The bottom and bottom halves of the sides are lined with 210D polyamide for added abrasion resistance. Webbing: 100% polyester.

It doesn't work on the Jääkäri L shown in the pictures. It only has a few bars of webbing.
Savotta hides the info in the description: "Savotta recommends the 8 L side pouch to be used only on the Jääkäri XL"
If you buy the 8L for the Jääkäri L based on the photos you will be disappointed.

Bought this 8l version for my jakari M.
Sadly it doesn't fit the best, because you can't molle it through the whole way.
Only a bit at the top,and even tinier bit on the bottom. In the middle it can't be fixed,so it feels and looks loose.
I counter that with backpack straps but I was hoping I won't have to.
Everything else is fine, very sturdy, great zippers, and surprisingly a lot of room.
I can fit my msr alpine 2 pot kit, with a kettle inside of the pots and it takes just a bit less than half the pouch. I fill the rest with my food, and I can carry about 2 days worth of food this way easily, just in this pouch.
All in all I'm happy with purchase, except the fact there is no full molle on the back. For the price,I think it should be...

Bulletproof. Fits perfectly on the Jaakari XL, ofc, but I also use it on the Jaakari M. You do need to skip one set of webbing when weaving it on so it's a bit floppy, but really it works perfectly fine on the M. It does look a bit silly.

I like that it only has the top and bottom webbing. No reason why it would need the middle webbing, it securely attaches with the top and bottom.

Fits a Trangia 27, 500mL fuel bottle, and probably 2 maybe 3 days of dehydrated rations for one person.
