The fold-top lid of the main compartment is quick and easy to open and close using two SR buckles. Fast like a zipper, but super reliable in extended use in mud, sand, and snow. Inside, you’ll find a hydration bladder/radio compartment with two tie-down loops and a hydration bladder attachment webbing tab on the top. Each side of the pack has one antenna/cable/tube port.

The pleated, expandable side pouches allow quick access to equipment such as water bottles, E-tools, bolt cutters, etc. Each pouch has a capacity of c. 3 liters when filled so that the top side compression strap tightens the pouch shut. When empty, the pouches lay neat and flat. Vertical webbing loops keep the side compression straps neatly in place. The pouches have water drainage holes on the bottom.

The two side compression straps with steel G-hooks on either side of the pack offer both compression and a means of quickly strapping gear to the outside of the pack. The G-hooks also enable you to add extra pouches/bags to the back of the pack.

The Kahakka 25L has two external zippered pouches. The one on top of the lid has a capacity of c. 3 liters, suitable for NVDs, water bottles, etc. The flat one on the front of the pack has a webbing loop with a D-ring inside, good for small trinkets and valuables. Each zipper has two pullers with generous cord loops to silence them and make the zippers easier to use with thick gloves on.

PALS webbing on the front and bottom allows you to attach extra gear using an elastic cord or packing straps. The webbing loops above the side pouches can be used to secure gear with cords, carabiners, or packing straps.

The back is padded and supported with a thick and stiff closed cell foam pad, placed in an open-topped compartment on the outside of the pack. The pad is quick and easy to remove and reinsert, and you can use it as a sitting/kneeling pad. You can also use the compartment to carry other equipment, such as a tarp or rain poncho.

The padded, contoured shoulder straps attach to steel D-rings, which allow the shoulder straps to turn and conform to various body shapes. The shoulder straps can be removed and replaced if needed. The sternum strap is removable and can be moved up and down the shoulder straps as desired.

The 50 mm webbing belt closes with a super secure Berg buckle, very easy to use, even with thick cold weather gloves on. The belt can be tucked away into the back pad compartment when not in use.

Use

"Kahakka" is Finnish for a "small battle" or "skirmish", quite suitable for what is literally a small combat pack. The "special thing" about the Kahakka packs is that they really aren’t special at all. They are serious packs for the 99% of users who need a straightforward all-around combat/daypack with enough scalability and versatility for various jobs and changing situations.

The Kahakka packs are made for the realities of military use. Savotta has over half a century of experience in making gear for the Finnish Defence Forces, who prefer their gear to endure up to and beyond a decade of vigorous use. The Kahakkas are rugged indeed, but Savota hasn’t sacrificed functionality nor dumbed down the design for the sake of durability. What we have here is a peculiar mix of functionality, comfort, and traditional Savotta ruggedness.

This larger pack has a total capacity of c. 30 liters, plus numerous attachment options for extra gear. It has enough capacity for all sorts of essential mission-related and personal equipment, including bulky cold-weather clothing which is a must-have here in Finland.

Rugged and repairable

The main body of the pack is made from 1000D Cordura for high abrasion resistance- Some details, such as the back pad compartment and fold-top sides, are made from lighter and less coarse 500D. The covered zippers have two pullers, so you always have a backup in case one fails.

The shoulder straps are easily replaceable if damaged., The bottom straps can be replaced with any length of 25 mm (1") webbing if needed.

All plastic buckles can be removed and replaced without sewing. The side compression straps use steel G-hooks, which will not fail and offer the option to quickly hook on extra gear to the back of the pack.

Kahakka 15L or 25L, Which one to choose?

First of all, we are not the experts on what you need, you are. The big difference between these two is of course the size; the 25L is considerably bigger than the 15L and also has a belt and additional rectangular pouch on top of the lid.

If you commonly need to carry bulky winter clothing on top of your other essential gear, get the 25L. If you want a streamlined, compact pack and don’t need that extra 10 liters of space: get the 15L. Either way, both packs offer many options to add extra gear to the outside, and good compression straps to tighten down the pack when half full.

Amazing. I was using a Hatka previously as an everyday bag, and it was dead simple, mostly perfect. I was gonna get some strap padding for it, but then the Kahakka came out here. Completely blew me away.
I own an Askare, Hatka, Jääkäri L, and this is by far my favorite of them all. The straps on this are perfectly sufficient for now, but they're easily replaceable on full metal D-rings. The exterior zipper into the lid pocket is one of my favorite features so far. I only found the other exterior zippered pocket 3 or 4 days into daily use, and that one is truly massive.
Elastic band retention setup for the water bladder pocket is excellent as well. Dead simple to use and is highly useful. I can't get started on the gigantic side pouches either. G-Hooks are amazing once you get used to them.
The Kahakka 25L is my new daily driver.

First: should you choose this pack, or the Savotta Jääkäri Medium? The price is about the same. I finally decided on the Kahakka because it seems if you’re not carrying much in the Kahakka, you can compress it down a lot smaller than you can the Jääkäri. Whether this is actually so or not, I don’t know.

There’s no such thing as a “perfect” pack, though I keep buying them trying to find one. But just below “perfect” is “outstanding” and this one is outstanding.

I mostly use this to haul my training gear. It easily fits a pair of 16 ounce boxing gloves, shoes, training clothes, water bottle, towel, and associated paraphernalia with a lot of room remaining to carry groceries home after the workout. There’s also room for my laptop, which I keep in the “water bladder” compartment. I also like the rubberized lining on the inside of the pack.

This is my first Savotta pack. I wish I knew about Savotta stuff years ago. The build quality is superb. I don’t think you can abuse this pack to failure…unless you slash it repeatedly with a sword or toss it directly into a campfire, you’re never going to hurt it. Its durability and strength is obvious.

It would work great as a carry-on bag. If you put compressible stuff like clothes in there you can small-ify the pack significantly with the compression straps. You might even be able to fit it under your seat on the plane. The expandability of the pack is also pretty impressive: just loosen the straps and cram more stuff in there. Caution, though: at full bigness, the pack might be too large for a carry-on, depending on the size of the overhead bin on your plane.

One thing I wish the pack had is a square section of PALS webbing between the top and bottom horizontal PALS, for more attachment options.

You can buy cheaper rucksacks, but I don’t think you can buy better quality or tougher rucksacks than Savotta.

So I upgraded to this from my Jääkäri S, which I used daily for the last 7 years, and this pack is basically the Rolls Royce of the Jääkäri S, and it should be considering the price. So this is mainly a comparison to the S, which is in my opinion the best pack ever made in its price range.

What surprised me about the Kahakka was that it actually kinches down even smaller than the Jääkäri S, thanks to it's stiffening "ribs" it stays in shape a lot better. It can take even more stuff, and organize it a bit better too. So while I thought of the Jääkäri S as a black hole, the Kahakka is an improvement on that.

The back panel is made from 500D Cordura, and it almost fixes the main gripe I had with the S, but it's still too abrasive to whatever clothing you have. So anything wool or low quality cotton will ball up and get ruined if used too much.

The carrying straps is a night and day difference, a lot more comfortable, easier to adjust and with the sternum and hip straps you can carry proper heavy. With the S i considered 10kg the comfortable limit for a few hours, this pack is comfortable all day with 10kg.

It certainly looks sturdy. Though if you destroy one of these packs I hope you're still alive. My S looked brand new despite daily use, roughly 100 flights, temperatures ranging from -30c - 40c and getting ran over by a truck, twice. I hope it serves its new "owner" well...

I hope this pack is with me until I'm an old fart. It certainly should hold out that long.
