Checked button-up shirts are a stylish choice no matter what happens to be the fashion of the day. You might reserve this lightweight wool button-up for special occasions, but once you get a taste of quality, there's a risk you'll want to wear it every day – no matter what you're up to.
- Lightweight button-up shirt with check pattern
- Fabric: 100% wool
- Truly lightweight – the entire shirt weighs only 285 g / 10.1 oz (Size Medium)
These days, far too many clothes are just cheap (and not always that cheap) imitations of those old-fashioned, good-quality garments made from quality materials and crafted the right way. Here's our contribution to making a change for the better – when a wool flannel shirt is too hot for the weather, opt for this lightweight version. The material is 100% wool, the buttons are Canadian style, and there are gussets under the arms. We couldn't settle for just ordinary; it had to be exceptionally good if not perfect.
The cut is classic, with flap chest pockets, a button-down collar, and adjustable cuffs. It works anywhere, from downtown to the Lapland fells and on to the neighbor's barbecue or whatever – and if you get wet in the rain, this will still keep you warmer than a cotton shirt. Gussets were added under the arms for better mobility without adding any bagginess.
Material and care
The fabric is 100% wool, weighs 180 g/m2 (5.3 oz./m2), very densely woven with a wee bit of stretch. Wash at 30°C / 86°F with a wool cycle, and hang dry. Usually just brushing off dirt and airing the shirt out is enough. The use of wool care products is recommended but not mandatory.
Made in the EU
This fine shirts are manufactured in Lithuania by Vilkma.

We have listed first the simple size, then the user's recommended measurements: user height/chest circumference. These are fitted with a bit of a slim waist for sharper looks.
In the charts below are the actual measurements of the shirt laid flat: widths at the chest (pit-pit), waist, and hem, back length from the base of the collar to the hem, and sleeve length from the shoulder seam including the cuff.

On the first try I found the shirt to be a bit short, but since then I have found the length to be just right (188cm, 84kg, Large Long). The length is just so that it doesn't interfere with disposing your waste liquids while standing (as god intended). Maybe the lowest button could be a bit lower, it currently sits a bit above the belt line. So if you want to make sure that no one can enjoy your navel you have to tie your belt high. I don't mind navel gazers, so it's all good!
At first the material was a bit stiff but loosened up after washing, even became a bit softer. I used a wool detergent with lanolin.
I might start using the shirt for more strenuous activities soon, as I think it would be great for hiking and backpacking.
March 16: so I took the shirt out for a spin a week ago and washed it today. It had endured a day of intense labor in hot and sun-intense conditions. It was rather hard to get out all the salt stains with my gentle wool detergent, but applying detergent directly to the stains worked. I had to use way more detergent than usual though.
It was awesome to be able to open some buttons to increase air flow for ventilation. The shirt's drying right now, I'll let you know how it goes.
April 28: After about a month of regular use without washing the highlight was a 21 mile march for remote military march, temps were high and potential for bugs was high too. I sprayed the shirt with bug spray and it constantly rubbed against my sunscreen soaked skin. Again the shirt held up pretty well.
Hand washing the shirt after such an ordeal was quit laborious, requiring a lot of water, wool detergent and a soft brush. Especially the sunscreen was hard to get out. But once cleaned it's good as new! Ironing this shirt is also quite difficult, especially getting the seam areas flat is no easy task. But having to do this only once a month or less is fine!

What I've found with them is they'll shuck off dust, dirt etc. incredibly well (CEO Jari and I were rolling around in the dust at SRA Hätilä 2023 and it just fell off on its own after a while), won't smell, and will go ages without washing. But when you do wash them, iron them properly while wet then hang to dry, otherwise there'll be chaos. Ask me how I know.... The wool flannel shirts don't need ironing though if you're a lazy sod.
If you're quite sensitive to wool they might prickle a touch on your body; wear a T-Shirt under them in that case (which is what I do, they don't prickle my arms at all). The material of the green is softer and less prickly than the black.

The fit is great and the cut is slim. I am 5'7" and weigh 140 lbs and got a small/regular and it fits a little more snugly than I would like.

The only downside is that it’s too short - to get normal length you must choose a longer size. I’m 185/93 and L LONG fits me just perfect.

The shorter hem of this shirt is ideal for tails out wear. The only thing I didn't like about this shirt, and it might just be because of the natural material -- is that cigarette smoke really clings to this shirt, I found out after being in a smoky bar.

Thanks for the warning about it being short: I've compared the size charts for this and for the Sarma wool flannel shirt I already own: according to the size charts, that in Medium Regular size has the same centre back length as this one in Large Long size! I was thinking of ordering this in Large Regular, but am now thinking of buying it in Large Long instead, even though I'm only 1.78m/5'10".
The color of this shirt is really superb ~ super ugly
The most important size of the shirt is shoulder width + chest width + back length + hand length
No shoulder width... no shoulder width ~ I am 1.8m 104kg, shoulder width 52cm, shirts are usually not enough shoulder width to wear
Why does this wool shirt have no shoulder width? Is this a joke?
It is 180g/m2. This shirt was made lighter and not intended to be worn crawling and dashing balls deep in mud, so it's 100% wool.
Ps. tämän hintaisessa tuotteessa sopisi edellämainittujen taskujen taikka edes selkäpalan kuvioinnin istuvan edes ”sinnepäin” muuhun kankaaseen. Tätä jos on tarkoituksena käyttää ihmisten ilmoillakin eikä missään naamiaisissa pukeutuen ties miksikä Mad Max -elokuvan hunsvotiksi.
It's a really light and thin wool, unlike most merino wool I've had. And made in the EU, Lithuania I believe
