Here is a top-tier single-piece cantilever scope mount for your rifle! The Reptilia AUS Mount is especially suited for AR-type rifles, where the mount attaches to the upper receiver's fixed Picatinny rail – cantilevered forward to allow for your eye relief preference.

  • Very light
  • Sturdy construction
  • Compatible with accessories

This mount fits a 30-millimeter scope tube. There are two scope sight heights to accommodate your preference: 39 mm / 1.54" and 43 mm / 1.7" from the center of the bore. It comes in two colors: black and FDE.

Features

The Reptilia AUS Mount attaches to the Picatinny rail with spring-loaded steel clamps. You can tighten the screws with either a T25 Torx tool or a flat blade screwdriver (we recommend a Torx tool) – remember to press the mount downward and forward while tightening to keep it firmly in place despite recoil. The scope rings have T15 Torx screws. The mount is machined from a single piece of 7075-T6 aluminum and finished with MIL-STD Type III Class 2 hard anodized coating.

  • Machined from 7075-T6 aluminum

Recommended Torque Specs

What's torque, you ask? In firearm installations, it's advisable to follow the torque values provided by the manufacturers – that is, how tight the screws should be fastened. So, get yourself a torque wrench with a range of about 0-70 in-lbs / 0-8 Nm! As engraved on the scope mount, tighten the mounting clamp screws to 45 in-lbs / 5.1 Nm and the scope ring screws to 15 in-lbs / 1.7 Nm.

Installation Instructions

If installing a scope mount is new to you, here are the instructions. For installation, it’s also good to have some sort of aid to keep the rifle in place, such as a bench vise and for AR rifles, a device like the Magpul BEV Block.

Tools Required

  • T15 Torx tool
  • T25 Torx tool or a large flathead screwdriver (we recommend a Torx tool)
    • (The manufacturer's instructions mention a 5/32-inch hex key, but that is incorrect)
  • Recommended: Torque wrench for small torques (e.g., 0-70 in-lbs / 0-8 Nm)

Mount Installation

  • You'll need the T25 Torx tool and torque wrench for this step
  • Place the mount in the position on the Picatinny rail that's suitable for your eye relief
    • Typically on AR rifles, the ocular lens of the scope should be quite near the rear edge of the upper receiver
    • Both clamps of the scope mount should attach to the upper receiver's fixed Picatinny rail, not the handguard rail
  • Press the mount downward and forward, then lightly tighten the front clamp followed by the rear
  • Finally, torque the front clamp to 45 in-lbs / 5.1 Nm and then the rear

Scope Ring Installation

  • You'll need the T15 Torx tool and torque wrench for this step
  • Remove both scope top ring caps – don't lose the screws
    • Perform this step somewhere other than above a drain, full trash can, or similar (we have been there)
  • Place the scope in the mount in a preferred position and reinstall the ring caps, then lightly tighten the screws so the scope can still move in the mount
  • Position the scope for proper eye relief without any sideways cant
    • At this point, it's a good idea to ensure the scope is actually horizontally level – for proper scope adjustments and especially if you plan to shoot at longer distances, e.g., with a ballistic reticle
    • There are several methods for checking scope cant, which may require aids such as bubble levels, a flashlight, string, etc. – you can also research this topic online with a suitable search phrase like "how to level a scope"
    • One method is to draw a straight line on a target (or such) with a bubble level, then align the rifle's receiver straight using a small bubble level, and finally align the scope's reticle parallel to the line on the target
  • When the scope is properly positioned, lightly tighten the scope ring screws in an X-pattern (e.g., front-left, rear-right, rear-left, front-right)
  • Finally, torque the screws in the same X-pattern to 15 in-lbs / 1.7 Nm
