Features

Unlike the cheap rubber band contraptions, these have a very clever design. They come with a tough Vibram rubber sole, which has the bonus feature of improving the insulation against cold creeping in from the frozen earth. The Velcro bands are attached on top of the soles, so you won’t ever step on them and wear them out prematurely. There are 17 tough screwed-on studs on each sole. You can also buy spare studs as an accessory, so it is easy to replace the worn-out or missing ones. These are quite shitty on stiletto heels, but work very well on most winter shoes and boots.

Use

The Velcro attachment is a bit slower to use than rubber bands but also a lot more stable. The rubber band versions wobble here and there, and the rubber bands die quite quickly if you walk a lot. The fixed studs are also tricky because when they get loose or damaged, you need to throw away the whole thing. These you just replace and carry on.

These have adjustable straps at the front and back. It is essential that you fasten them tightly, so that the sole won’t move here and there. The easiest way to do it is before putting the shoe/boot on.

It goes without saying, but let’s say it anyway, these aren’t suited for indoor use. They will make a lasting impression on your floor. Nor should you use these on hard and smooth surfaces like tiles or steel outdoors either, because they can be slippery and they definitely wear out faster. These provide the best traction when the studs are sharp, so replace the ones that are too worn out.

These are the best there is. Mine are 5 years old and going strong. If you walk on pavement at all you will wear out the studs because they have a concave surface. The studs are very easy to replace and the high wear areas of your sole will need replacement more often. I usually get half a winter out of the studs on the heal and ball of my foot. Made in Canada and tested on real Canadian ice.
You will not regret this purchase.

These are the best ice cleats you can buy in my opinion. I've had my set for two years now (not through Varu, but I'm glad they carry them now), and have put a gross amount of miles on them, including walking to and from work 3 hours a day last winter. The straps require some finangling and must be adjusted to the individual boot you wear, but when you set it right they simply will not fall off like those trash elastic ones do.
Also, don't forget to buy replacement studs, as the cleats themselves will last a long time, long as you ensure you replace the studs as they wear out. Unless you're walking on asphalt or concrete regularly, they will likely last a winter.
