This French commando tent looks like something from decades ago. Well, actually these are just that. Fits two persons and has luxurious space for one. If traditional design inspires you, this isn't a half-bad option for leisurely camping or festival life. It's sturdy army surplus and fairly lightweight.

The French didn't adopt the shelter-half style of pup tent like so many other European armies did but instead went for a nostalgic Snufkin-style tent. The waterproof groundsheet is sewn to the main fabric to keep scorpions and centipedes out. The F2 versions are made of nylon with aluminum poles, which makes them light to carry and quick to dry. Easy to pitch by two, can be done solo as well.

We previously had the occasional F1 cotton version, which is worse and no longer available. This may be reflected in some customer reviews.

The ends can be opened up quickly and the closed design means nothing gets inside if every opening is shut. Additionally, each end and sides have vents with mosquito nets. The side vents can be closed to retain heat, at the expense of increased condensation.

The green tents have doors in both ends, the khaki ones have a single entrance.

Inside height 1 m39"

Total weight3.4 kg7.5 lbs

Aluminum pole set330 g11.5 oz
Steel stake set*900 g2 lbs

*The stakes are unnecessarily heavy in our opinion. Ditch them for lighter ones or have your companion carry the stake set while you carry the rest of the tent to balance loads. Some tents have come with a stake set weighing at one pound. These have been surprises to us and we don't pick and choose these.

Contents

  • The tent itself
  • Two aluminum poles
  • A bag of 17 stakes (8 for the guylines, 9 for anchoring the tent base to ground)
  • Guylines: two long ones for the ends, six for the sides
  • A nylon stuff sack

Modifications

You can lighten your load by using lighter stakes. The ones included are definitely strong but weigh a ton. You can also use wooden sticks to anchor the tent to the ground, so you really need maybe 8 stakes. We recommend using 6 smaller stakes and 2 bigger ones for the ends.

Additionally, consider cutting a big hole into the tent floor if you do not need it. This will help cleaning and drying the tent but also removes the "Insect-proof!" bit. Your call!

The tents alone do keep out water to a degree when waterproofed with a suitable agent and pitched taut. In heavy rain, you're supposed to rig a tarp or flysheet over the tent for protection. In sunny weather, a flysheet helps keep the tent cool.

French army surplus

Mostly unissued, but there might be some used ones (in a pretty shape of course) in the mix. In any case, you'll get a lot of tent for the buck!

Just received my second tent in tan to go with my older OD one I've had for a while. The tan tent seems to be completely NOS, whereas the OD one seems to have seen a bit of use.

Teltta tuli tänään postiin ja pakkohan se oli heti koe kasata, ennen huomista retkeä. No onneksi koe kasasin, vaikka teltta oli ihan koskematon, on pakkausta joskus varmaan käpistelty. Lopputulema ihan oiva teltta, kevyt (tottunut retuuttamaan sissiteltaa mukan), tilava kahdelle riisitautiselle

Decent tent, goes up and comes down easily. Only reason not 5 star is because it sucks up water from the air, a fog will leave water dripping on the inside roof of tent. Easily solved with a can of waterproofing. Switched out the guide lines with some orange reflective para cord which makes a huge difference at night. I ordered the green tent and it seems to be brand new NOS, worth the money.

Hyvä teltta lämpimällä kelillä. Kesäkuun lopussa tilattu F2 vihreä teltta oli uusi.

My tent arrived and I set it up in my backyard almost immediately. Easy to set up and seems quite well made. For the price is much better quality than a similarly priced tent at Walmart or Canadian Tire. What I really like is that it can be opened at both ends. I'm going to use it camping this weekend, so I'll find out how water resistant it is.

Toimiva ja kestävä perusteltta kestävällä telttakankaalla jossa plussana verkotus tuuletusaukoissa, jolloin yöunet myös lapissa taattu. Kestää isältä pojalle, jos ei kovin pahoinpitele. Hiukan painavahko, saattaa vaatia telttakyllästettä mutta muuten 5/5.

If we compare this tent to modern designs its construction is obsolete, and yet I find it quite charming. Perhaps because it reminds me of the first tent I've had as a boy. Nostalgia aside, this tent is quite good if we consider the price. I've received the brand new and complete nylon version. The stakes needs to be replaced for the aluminium ones since the ones included with a tent weight as much as the tent itself but everything else is good. The tent is still to heavy for backpacking though unless you are on a budget, if so you might wish to use hiking poles instead of the tent poles to cut on weight even more. However for car camping or canoeing this tent is very suitable. Not sure how the condensation will be in this tent but increased condensation in a single wall tents is common so will see. Like I said for the price very good.
