The purpose of a bivouac "bivvy" sack is to shield the sleeper from rain when a tent is not available. The waterproof material prevents water ingress from above or the wet ground, and the breathability allows vapor from the sleeper to exit the bag. Obviously, this also lowers the temperature limit of your sleeping bag.
Bivvy bags are used for sleeping outdoors without a proper shelter, but it can also be an extra layer against the weather in a lavvu or wet tent.
Features
This model has a center zipper protected by a storm flap with snap fasteners. The open end is, well, open; the drawcord gives it some shape but a "rain jacket turned into a micro shelter" can greatly improve your comfort when it pours.
The inside has snap fasteners for connecting to a Danish sleeping bag, but the brand of your sleeping bag doesn't really matter. Just get in there. The open end has elastic packing straps, which are too large for the bivvy alone, but perfect if you roll it with a sleeping bag inside.

Material and care
Made of a 3-layer laminate with polyamide on the outside, polyester on the inside, and a PFTE membrane sandwiched in between. The seams are taped waterproof.
These kind of materials work best when they are clean; the shell breathes worse if it's dirty or soaked. Machine washing with a liquid detergent is recommended. If you treat the outside with a solution for Tex-fabrics, water will bead off the thing like it's new.
Danish surplus
These seem to have mostly been stored: the fabric and tapes are all in excellent condition based on our checks. The edge of a trim here or a scuffed snap fastener there reveals that they aren't factory new, but the previous users were careful.
