During the Vietnam war, some folks came up with a pair of silly good aviator gloves with the grippier side made of leather and everything else of fire-retardant Nomex. This meant the gloves did not melt on the pilot's hands if the plane caught fire. These gloves weren't good only in the cockpit, so they were a coveted piece of gear among others as well. This is the winter model of the original glove

Use

For winter gloves, these feel very nice. So, you can, for example, shoot with these on. Of course, it isn't as easy as with no gloves on, but these will work very well when hunting, for instance. The palm side is made of sheepskin from the wrist to the tip of each finger. This gives a superb grip and good dexterity. The rest of the glove is made of fire-resistant Nomex. Gloves are kept firmly in place by elastic straps on the wrists. Long cuffs offer protection from the weather, making these nice for bicycling and motorcycling. These are not very good for wet stuff though, because they are not water-resistant.

These are not super thick winter gloves, so not ideal for that Antarctic expedition you are planning. But more than enough for modern "winters". These were designed for conditions of approximately -9 °C - +4 °C / 15°-40°F.

These are not designed for continuously abrasive work. They are durable and they do offer great dexterity and grip, but not the same kind of toughness that thickest work gloves do.

Size info

Sized according to the user's palm circumference in inches, as is usual with gloves. Measure yours like shown here. These are fairly roomy. The model in the pics has a 22 cm (8.7") palm but managed to squeeze his hands in size 8 gloves. Of course, if you don't have delicate guitarist fingers, you might want to stick with the normal size.

US military surplus

These gloves are as good as new or at least in very excellent condition. You might get a little bit of genuine US surplus dirt with them from the original warehouse or transportation but that won't affect the usability. or looks

First question: These are flight gloves. Do you fly a lot? If not perhaps you should look for something else in the glove section, unless of course you go all in when you play Microsoft Flight Simulator. If you still want these, read on: The pair I bought was brand new, with instructions included. As the description says, "for intermediate cold, dry conditions" so don't use these in wet weather (rain, snow). Due to this, their use is limited. They are a bit wider than I'm used to, and the flat fingertips are very strange, making the gloves quite clumsy. I could never use these for hunting or any other activity where you need to use your hands, besides perhaps holding a steering wheel. I could see myself using these when I start driving my cold car in the winter, but then I would really prefer the US vehicle crew combat gloves that are also sold by Varusteleka. Those gloves are most likely better suited for that purpose (just guessing from the name...). These are probably good for air crews (not the pilot) and nothing else. Price/value ratio is not so good so I will return them. FYI, according to the instructions they can be handwashed with soap in warm water not over 120F.

Omaan käteen tuntuu että -9°C talvihanskana mainostaminen on hieman optimistista. Jo +0 säässä selkäpuolen materiaali hengittää näppien kohdalta liiankin hyvin kävelyllä tai pyöräillessä.
Muuten ihan neljän tähden hanskat.
