Czech Mess Kit, Stainless Steel, New

Price 24.99 USD excluding sales tax

A three-piece Czech mess tin is like a breath of fresh air in the traditional mess kit world. Unlike the kidney-shaped kits that everybody has, this is round like the lovely full moon over the Carpathians. We have had the original aluminum ones, but these are modern stainless steel versions. If you’re not a friend of aluminum, you’ll fall in love with Edelstahl.

This is the modernized version of the Czechoslovakian aluminum thingy. And by modernizing we mean that the material has been switched to stainless steel, which is fantastic for cooking vessels. It consists of three parts: the lid that works as a frying pan/plate, a larger kettle, and a smaller kettle. Both kettles have a folding handle.

Cooking with this thing is very simple. Put the food in one of the pots, set it on a camp stove or open fire, close the lid, and wait. The kettles are easy to move with the handles as long as you remember that metal can become hot. The lid can be used as a frying pan, but it is somewhat tricky to move around because it doesn’t have a lid. It does work better as a plate though. Made in the Czech Republic by MFH.

Measurements

The whole kit weighs 505 grams (17.8 oz) when empty. The larger cup is 14.8 x 8.7 cm (5.8” x 3.4”), and you can fit c. 1.4 liters (47.3 oz) of soup in it. The smaller cup is 13.2 x 7.7 cm (5.2” x 3.0”), and it takes 1 liter (33.8 oz). The lid is 15.5 x 3.2 cm (6.1” x 1.25”).

I've used it on a few trips and is now thoroughly blackened. Good sized pot, I tend to leave the smaller pot at home due to weight. All included it weighs about the same as the Swiss mess kit, so not that bad. Its stainless and bombproof, and you can use the lid as a small but nice frying pan. Just get a pot grabber or pliers.

Very shiny, brand new. Very nice. Stainless steel should last for years and years. My wife the Scout leader will be enjoying Christmas next month!

Note: the ubiquitous Swedish plastic cup can be stored inside the smaller pot and the lid will close, just, on the larger pot.
