A small, brown canvas or linen backpack from Czechoslovakia. These are probably made in the earlier part of the Cold War, copied almost directly from the German World War 2 era rucksack. Actually a pretty nice piece, especially considering the price!

Compared to modern rucksacks, this little thing might look a bit archaic, but hey, it's genuine retro stuff made to military specs. This means this still wipes the floor with most cheapo civilian packs when it comes to durability. And definitely looks refreshingly different.

Volume maybe 20 liters, with two smaller outer pockets. No frame on this, but you can slide in a piece of a foam mat for support.

Comes complete with Y-harness for carrying. The same suspenders keep your belt kit up. The pack looks a lot like the German World War 2 rucksacks, but the attachment to the harness is reversed (loops in the pack, hooks in the Y-suspenders). A nice trick is to bend the metal hook thingies "shut" if you have no need for taking them off. Or alternatively, just anchor them on the loops with, say, pieces of string.

Czech army surplus

Used but in good serviceable condition. Remember that one day these will be gone forever, get yours while still available!

Despite its age, this backpack is a must-have for anyone who appreciates vintage military equipment. It has the style of the WW2-era design, while being functional and durable. The one I received is made of a thick khaki canvas which will not wear easily, the only imperfection being a line of discoloration where the fabric had been left folded-presumably in storage-for years. As it is based off the German design, it fits onto my older model Bundeswehr suspenders perfectly. This is a great improvement from the Czech straps supplied, as they do not fall off as easily and they are far more comfortable. Very well suited to hiking, with the two roomy front pockets being able to hold lots of stuff for easy access when on the move. Some reviews note that the buckles which fasten the flaps closed tend to slip a bit and do not stay tightly fastened. I have managed to overcome this by putting the strap through the buckle, and then up looping it again through the top half of the buckle providing the grip necessary to keep the straps from slipping. A change from some of the dodgy eastern bloc surplus which can tend to be poorly manufactured, this backpack seems to be a very well-built product. Overall a great backpack, especially for the price!

TL;DR: The bag is a genuine and filthy (literally) piece of communist kit; I absolutely love it! Give the bag and staps a good long soak in borax, and detergent, machine wash, and you will have an excellent and durable bag.

Long version: I have purchased this product twice (with the straps for both) and was greeted by the wonderful odour of unfiltered cigarette smoke. I swear these were kept in a warehouse guarded by chain-smoking conscripts. When soaking the bags, I was greeted by the wonderful stench of stale nicotine. The water in which these bags sat turned a toxic yellow.

However, this is nothing that a long soak and multiple machine washes can't fix. I recommend inverting the bag before you throw it in the wash so as to keep the metal bits from getting scratched/scratching up your washer. Speaking of metal, my examples came with metal components in far better condition than those shown in the photos. Both my bags and straps were virtually, if not completely, rust-free; there was even a lovely eastern bloc green colouring to them.

If these come back in stock (I seem to have purchased one of the last examples), I recommend buying one or more! With a bit of elbow grease, you can secure a durable bag for your adventures!

I have four or five of these, though I dont think I got any of them from Varusteleka. These are great, think of them as 2/3 of a DIY rucksack kit. Use either the linen or canvas bag, and wax it with 50-50 beeswax and linseed oil. Wait for it to dry, then go over it with a hair dryer to really get the waxing material into those fibers. Don't bother with Czech shoulder straps as they aren't great - get some Austrian Y straps from our Finnish buddies right here. They are leather with nice padding, and after treating the leather just cut the steel Y piece to give you two shoulder straps, then attach the straps to the ruck with heavy duty stainless split rings from Amazon. Under the lid, I got some orange waxed canvas and sewed it under the main flap and set a zipper in it to make a pocket that doubles as a distress marker when flipped over. Occasionally Czech leather buckle straps become available, so if you can find three of those you can replace the cloth straps and crappy friction buckles with nice leather straps. Just attach them with copper rivets and burrs, and add an extra strap of leather under the flap as reinforcement. This is a nice winter project, and you end up with a beautiful day bag that I think is better than Frost River waxed canvas and you end up spending way less for it in German blanket tokens.
