Back when everything was black and white, armies used aluminum bottles to carry water. These are Swedish surplus, some probably even made during the Second World War. With a volume of about 0.65 l (22 fl oz), you better have an extra bottle or a water supply nearby. Attaches to your kit with the clip-on hook/belt loop thingie. When you want to drink, detach the whole thing by opening the clip.

The bottle isn't meant to be taken out of its cover and serves three purposes:

  • Cover the metallic shine and reduce noise
  • Protect from the cold and make it nicer to touch
  • When soaked, it keeps the contents a bit cooler in hot weather

The models vary a bit, see the pictures. We do not differentiate.

Swedish army surplus

Old, used aluminium water bottles. Needless to say, these might require diligent cleaning before use. They will have some nasty odours by default. We'd be tempted not to sell these for actual drinking purposes and wash our hands entirely of any consequences that might arise.

The two I received where not in good shape: The caps/threading were badly corroded and, worse yet, the rubber pieces on the inside of the caps had turned to total shit, leaching a red chemical into the mouth of the canteen. The canteens were also pretty banged up, with numerous dents and dings. I'm still not sure if I am going to keep these and try and clean them up more or just call it a day and recycle them. Either way, if you are after an old-school metal canteen, I would look elsewhere.

Old, but my example usable with a quick clean. Lets face it; you're not going to use such a thing on serious expeditions/work. Aesthetically though, it's pretty damn good and is perfectly good for a day hike.

I have a pair of these and yeah, quite simple and self explanatory. Not sure on the current scientific consensus of using aluminium for food and drink, so might not be advisable to use these on that front. The rubber sealed ones have a sealing problem due to old rubber, you can replace them with a round piece of cork, rubber or silicone as per your liking to prevent any undesirable leaks. If you use it bottom side down, that might not be a problem at all.
