Features

The Swiss make the best and coolest looking sunglasses. These goggles have dark-tinted plastic lenses. The frame is vented and has a dark rubber padding, providing the wearer with a more comfortable fit. The goggles are fixed in place with an elastic band. These come with a hard plastic case.

There is no information on UV protection but since these are fairly modern and made by Cébé that is famous for making high-quality sunglasses, it is quite likely. Because this is military surplus, we cannot give any guarantees on their protective properties though.

History

These goggles were first developed in the 1920s and used throughout WW2. They were designed to protect Gebirgsjäger troops from snow blindness in the mountains. Throughout the years, their materials have been developed but the looks have changed very little. The WWII versions came in a metal case but these more modern ones have a plastic one.

Condition

Unissued Swiss military surplus. The case can have some small scratches, dust, or something similar from storage.

Comfort level is ok, the tint is quite nice, and they don't seem to fog up. The vent holes are large enough that you can see them around the periphery which is a little weird but isn't really a problem.

On the down side, it's an unlined plastic case and the lenses are very lightly scratched in a couple of spots, presumably from being rattled around periodically while sitting in storage for who knows how long. The effect on clarity is negligible and they're still quite usable, but anyone getting these is going to want to do something about the case.

The lenses are unscratched (which might just be luck with the unlined case), feels pretty similar to swim goggles on the face, although the foam is less sticky. There are some small dents in the foam that may be due to getting squished for a while in storage, however they do not affect comfort. The case seems robust, with surprisingly little evidence that it was moulded, few burrs, and the bits that let the plastic through during manufacturing are barely noticeable without light or touching.

Having worn it outside (without the snow yet), it fogs up a bit since the vent holes and a mask are not a good combination (only about 30% of the bits next to my nose got fogged), but more on the left eyecup where dent/impression is in the foam. However, it did succeed in making my eyes feel more comfortable in the cold wind. Additionally, it makes bright lights more bearable which is always a plus with the snow around.

I wear glasses, but they're hard to clean and get dirty if someone looks at them the wrong way, so I wanted a pair I could use for dirty stuff like the rain, snow, or for more sportslike use where I don't have to worry about them falling off my head.

So I got a local optician to make a pair of reactive (they darken in the sun) prescription lenses to replace the glass ones that these come with. The glass is easy to remove with a pair of good tweezers, the metal tabs just bend in to secure the lens, very simple, but in a good way. The lenses won't just pop out like with many normal glasses.
At £21, these are the cheapest glasses frames I've ever got, and since they aren't fragile, these could probably last a lifetime if well cared for, with only the elastic headband needing to be replaced every now and then. Cost to get the reactive lenses made was £60.

Comfort is...okay for what they are. These are goggles, not glasses, so expect them to dig into your face a little, a trade off for them being far harder to fall off. The thick rubber helps with the comfort, and since they don't need to be waterproof, they aren't as tight as say swimming goggles are.

The case is nice, but I worry about the lenses being scratched over time, so i got the "Edge Tactical Lens Cleaning Bag" sold on this site to keep them in instead. They do not fit in the case with the bag on, so i'm now using the case to store other stuff, its a nice case.
