Swiss pickaxe with carrier, surplus

Price 69.99 USD excluding sales tax

If there's a country where they've always made very vintage-inspired, "Man, Beard & Flannel shirt" kind of stuff, it's Switzerland. This mountain pickaxe is a genuine army issue item with a beautiful ol' leather carrier.

A pickaxe is a handy thing to have when you have to dig into the rocky or otherwise hard ground - turn the blade around and you have a chisel-like edge for cutting roots. When there's one guy with a pickaxe and one guy with a shovel, digging foxholes is a breeze! Try it!

You probably don't actually need a pickaxe in your everyday life, but you'll want this as a motivational wall hanger: scaling a mountain is sometimes hard using just your hands.

Made of steel and wood. Length about 50 cm / 19.5", weight 1.3 kg / 2.8 lbs.

Included is a very, very nice looking leather carrier which also has a handy belt loop to keep the pickaxe at reach all the time.

Genuine Swiss army kit

Old, used, in nice shape overall. However, we wouldn't really recommend taking this with you for the actual mountain climbing business. The pickaxes and the carriers are usually dirty after decades of storage (the carrier of the pictured example was dated 1943!), so some wiping and greasing will do wonders.

Swiss markings on the sheathe and likely never issued or used! Mine came with OD paint on the head and not a scratch. The only issue was that it was stored for so long that the wood must've dried and shrunk so the head loose and sliding around. Or it was left that way for transport/storage. Who knows, but it was like new and nothing that some banging and linseed oil didn't fix.

I put boot leather Nikwax on the leather sheath and it looks good as new. Really handy tool in the garden.

Glad I didn't hesitate when I ordered this. Like the other comment stated the handle on the one I received was loose, maybe it's meant to be that way. The leather sheath had some mold which I cleaned off and treated it with SofSole Leather Lotion which turned out nice. The steel bit/head was still oiled with no rust and has the number 39 stamped into it and painted black. The sheath is stamped with a Swiss marking on one strap and stamped on another part dated 1940 with something ??Wyttenbach Gerzensee in an oval around the 1940. If this same old batch pops up again I would say do not hesitate.

Handy little heavy duty tool to have, looks like its seen some use in its time but plenty of life left in it yet, not sure how old the pick head or helve are as no markings (apart from a slightly soviet looking star stamped into the chisel end of the pick head) but leather carrier is dated 1940.

Would have given it the full 5 stars but the long strap across the top of the leather carrier was snapped when it arrived, not entirely sure if it may be possible to jerry rig (in true military fashion) or bodge (in true shoestring military fashion) a repair as its a rather narrow strap, but more feasible than finding a new carrier given the overall scarcity of any part of this tool.

Okay, so you probably don't really need a nice compact pickaxe that you can hang on your belt, but if you're a vintage tool junkie, you NEED this pickaxe.

The head on mine is stamped 39, has no dings, and still has almost all of its paint. The wood is a bit rougher and a little loose fitting. After I clean it up and re-oil it I'll try setting it a bit deeper but it's pretty close to the end so we will have to see. Worst case scenario, I can always stick a wedge in it. The leather holder was dated 47 and is labelled A.PILLOUD-FILG BASEL. It's pretty decent for its age, but the stitching on the pick end is mostly gone from years of poking and the top of the belt loop looks thin and cracked where it was folded flat. It works for now, but realistically, if you carry it on your belt a lot it is liable to eventually fail.

I got 2 of theses. 1940 and 43 dated. Great shape, but oil the leather! Like most infantry pickaxes of its day, the handle is a slide on model (i.e. it comes right off for carrying it). Don't worry, the axe head won't fly off in normal use. I am surprised this detail was omitted in the description as some people may think they got a defect.
