The legendary LJK rucksack is a fine old pack, but when the 30 year old model is updated to the 21st century you get something even better. The Modular LJK is one of the very few modern military rucksacks with an external frame. This is a fantastic combination of external frame ruggedness and modern modularity and versatility, topped off with great materials and workmanship!

Attention! Unlike in the photos the latest production run has been made (by request of the Finnish army) with traditional metal flap buckles on the hip belt, see the Kevyt Rajapartio for an example of the buckle.

What the LJK Modular rucksack actually is

Development of the LJK Modular rucksack began in 2009 and soon after that it was offered to the Finnish Defence Forces and Border Guard as a part of a big deal to update the existing ruckasacks. Unfortunately the Swedish company Sacci won the big contracts with their overseas made cheaper alternatives, but the LJK Modular was still delivered in smaller numbers to some units. Te Modular LJK has also become a private purchase hit among military personell who want something better than the issued kit.

The main "thing" about the Modular LJK is to maintain the ruggedness and carry comfort of a proper external frame rucksack and update the backpack part itself to the modern age of MOLLE and modularity.

What sets it apart from the standard LJK

The pack itself has gone through a major overhaul: its larger and better divided, the lower compartment is now very easily accessible through a large two-way zippered lid instead of the old straight side zippers. The main body is one large space divided in two by a openable drawcord divider, so if you want you can stuff even the hugest of items inside.

The side pouches are no longer made to fit a issue Thermos bottle and some little trinkets, now they are large, box shaped pouches with lots of room and quick access via zippers. The side pouches are also detachable as they attach to the PALS matriz on the sides of the main body.

A large number of attachment points can be found everywhere on the rucksack, PALS webbing, webbing loops and rings. You can basically tie anything and everything anywhere you want on this beast!

Compartments and size

  • External measurements approx. 85 x 35 x 21 cm (excluding side pouches), volume approx. 80 litres, total weight 3,90 kg.
  • The upper compartment is covered by a large flap with adjustalbe straps and quick-release buckles. Under the flap is a snow lock, a drawcord around the rucksack mouth and a quick-release strap for extra security.
  • Inside the upper compartment is two attachment straps and a mesh pouch. On the upper sides are flap covered holes to pass a hydration bladder drinking tube through.
  • The lower compartment is accessed through a large zippered lid secured by two quick-release buckles. This is the perfect place for a sleeping bag!
  • The upper and lower main compartmetns are divided by a snowlock style wall, which can be loosened and opened if you want a single large compartment.
  • Removeable side pouches, size approx. 30 x 17 x 11 cm, volume approx. 6 litres. Attaches to the PALS webbing on the rucksack and can be secured by two quick-release straps.
  • The sides, the lid, the bottom and the back are covered in PALS webbing, to this you can attach just about anything, kit and extra pouches too.
  • On top and underneath the flap are numerous attachment points for kit such as a sleeping mat.

Carry system

  • External tubular DUR-aluminium frame, hand welded by true masters of the metal arts!
  • Completely adjustable shoulder straps and waist belt. The shoulder straps can quickly be adjusted on the go to change the balance point, this is great on longer hikes with heavy loads!
  • Adjustable to fit everybody, short or tall, wide or skinny!
  • Sternum strap with great adjustments, quick release buckle and an elastic part for extra comfort.
  • A very sturdy and well padded waistbelt with a pillow kind of thing against the lower back and a reliable metal flap buckle.

Materials

  • The ruckasack and side pouches are made from super tough 1000 Denier Cordura, same stuff that the military M05 combat kit is made from.
  • Rubberized reinforcment material between the rucksack and frame to resist wear.
  • The straps are all made from the same polyamide webbing that is used on military M05 vests and equipment.
  • All plastic buckles are made by ITW, the best of the best really.
  • The frame is hand welded from DUR-aluminium tubing, extremely lightweight and very, very strong.

Included is a warranty tag and an instruction pamphlet, both in Finnish. If you have any questions regarding these, just ask. The whole ordeal should be pretty straightforward, though. Although the warranty covers only domestic customers, if you somehow manage to break this, contact us and we'll sort it out in a way that satisfies everyone.

An incredibly good backpack. No matter how heavily you pack it, it's like it saying "Is that all you got?!" Even the heaviest load are a pleasure to wear, even over long distances. The weight just kind of disappears and eventually you do not think about that you are carrying a backpack of 20 kg
