Särmä U-boat leather jacket

If nothing else, the wartime Germans were masters at designing good looking clothes. This is a reproduction of the World War 2 era short U-Boat & tank crew leather jacket, which inspired the "modern" biker jacket (see: Terminator 2).

Sometimes there's no need to come up with new ideas, just dig them from the past - during the war years, the Finnish army had a very spiffy leather jacket issued to tank crews. Just like tanks, these jackets were few and far between. We did some intensive research and decided to revive these glorious relics, and here they are! A high quality reproduction of this fantastic piece.

Modeled directly after the M/36 tunic, which was modeled after the German model, the leather jackets were probably the coolest pieces of gear in the Finnish army and were likely collected away before leave, only to give a chance of getting some to others too. These are pretty much spot on, with only the buttons being plain type instead of the standard lion motif ones. Also, we didn't include the hooks inside the collar, probably no sane person would use them anyway.

Form fit, four front pockets, one inside pocket and a field dressing pocket like in the original. If you are familiar with classic German wool tunics of the Second World War, this is just about exactly the same, but made of leather.

Made of 100% buffalo leather and 100% cotton lining.

Heads up!

For a complete impression, you can purchase Finnish metal buttons for these. You'll need 10 big ones (22 mm) and 2 small ones (16 mm).

These are made by a small (about same size as us) Pakistani sewing factory run by two brothers. Due to their small size they are a very flexible team and what we've been most pleased with is how well they listen to advice. So far we have been very happy with the fruits of our common labour!

I've been meaning to get one of these German leather tunics for a long time but always held off because they usually run for well over $200, not including shipping. Well, imagine my glee when I saw one here for just $190 shipped (seriously, only $10 international shipping for a leather jacket? I just payed that much to ship a calendar to Poland...). I picked one up immediately and eagerly awaited its arrival. The pictures had made it look excellent, but in the back of my mind I was a bit concerned about getting such a good deal on a leather jacket. Would the quality suffer? Would it not be true to the pictures?

Long story short: no and no. This jacket is solid and looks exactly like the pictures. I was concerned about the fit when choosing a size because my chest is almost two sizes larger than my waist, so I usually have to compromise with something in between. I am 178cm tall, my chest is 107cm, and my waist is 80cm (those are actual measurements, not clothing sizes I wear), and here is a picture of how the jacket fits me (don't mind the touch of historical humor): http://imgur.com/a/wrC8z

I have no problems getting this thing on and buttoning it, but it is definitely a bit tight in the chest as I would expect. You can see how the top of the jacket has much less wrinkling from being stretched. However, this is actually the fit I usually go for, so it's perfect for me.

If you're wondering about the weather conditions this would be best for, I have so far tried wearing it in temperatures around 0 degrees C with a long sleeve shirt under it and it was a pretty perfect combination. It wasn't toasty warm but that's how I like it. I would imagine this can be used a three season jacket perfectly as long as you layer underneath it appropriately.

If I have but one minor complaint, it's that the buttons are sewn on a bit too close to the leather, which makes buttoning and unbuttoning a bit difficult. Luckily they are stitched on very well so I'm not afraid of one popping off.

Overall, this jacket is just as awesome as I hoped it would be. Whether you want it for collecting purposes or to actually wear it, it's a steal for $180. Now go get your rifle and fight off those pesky Русские.

Excellent jacket, the leather and lining is very high quality though after a week of regular use the buttons stitching came loose and I had to re-attach them.
