Finnish Austro-Hungarian M17 Steel Helmet, Surplus, Grade 2

Price 149.99 USD 268.99 USD excluding sales tax

Original Austro-Hungarian M17 steel helmets, the classic coal-scuttle model! These were sold to Finland after the First World War and used around these parts for many decades, well past WWII. A very iconic piece of Finnish military history or military history in general. The second-grade stamp comes from the fact that one or both of the side-mounted "horns" are missing.

Not sold for any actual protective purposes, only as a collectible. So if you decide to crash your Harley wearing one of these, you can purely blame it on your own stupidity.

Size info

We sell these as a "one-size-fits-whoever-it-fits" kinda deal. They might not be very ideal for very big noggins The sizes differ a bit based on how thick the padding is. You can adjust the fit a bit by emptying or filling these and using the tie-cord.

Condition

Very much used and the liner has been replaced by the Finnish army at some point at least once. The condition of the chin strap and the liner vary, but they are quite intact. The lining, rivets, and other fixings can vary a lot and be quite modern, too. Additionally, having had a looong service life, the shell might have small dents and scratches or rust stains. They have also been repainted with gray or greenish-gray, sometimes in multiple layers so the original stamps are hidden underneath. So, when you order one of these, it might not look exactly like the ones in the pictures. These are all very cool nevertheless!

The second-grade stamp comes from the fact that one or both of the horns are missing. They were originally used to attach an additional steel brow plate, Stirnpanzer. However, the plate was so heavy that it saw very limited use.

I was going to refurb this helmet, and then realized that it was a survivor of WW1 and WW2! Most of the paint is still in tact, the liner leather is in good condition. Minor repair made to the strap ("field" type repair by me). Just a good washing with soap and water and a little W-D 40 on the rust spots cleaned the helmet up. I was able to find Schirmpanzer lugs ( newlty made in Czech Republic for Shell 64) which I may insert into the empty holes. Will not paint them to show that they are replacements. All in all....I AM FREAKIN' ECSTATIC to add a "Winter War" helmet to my collection.
