Tourniquets were invented in the Middle Ages, but have been out of fashion for a long time due to unfounded beliefs. In the recent decades they have made a comeback for a good reason: tourniquets save lives. We think everyone should carry one on a daily basis and the RATS is designed to make it more viable for regular people.

Massive bleeding is not unheard of in civilian life. Everyday traffic is one risk or something can happen at work. If you fantasize of saving the day, carry a tourniquet!

The modern battlefield and mass shootings have shown that the risk of having to amputate a limb because of a tourniquet was applied is not really an issue, while blood loss is among the most common reason for loss of life. This has changed the approach to tourniquets and instead of the last option to treat limbic hemorrhage, they are now pretty much the first thing you do. There's not an IFAK on the market today which doesn't include a CAT.

Civilian users should note that the RATS (short for Rapid Application Tourniquet System) works especially well for small limbs, in case you need to treat a wounded child or animal.

Be prepared

The RATS can be worn on belt loops or packed into a small pocket. It has no complex turn-bars or hook-and-loop to catch on things. When the need arises, you apply the RATS in three stages:

  1. Place the free end around the wounded limb and through the "three-finger loop"
  2. Wrap tightly around the limb with each turn close to the other to create a wider pressure site
  3. Once out of material, secure the end to the buckle

And a short instructional video with pulse meter to confirm effectiveness:

A tourniquet is tight enough when the patient shouts at you and tries to punch you, but it'll pass. Note that each turn increases overall pressure. Soon the bleeding should stop as well. Don't loosen the tourniquet, but write the time on it and wait for help to arrive.

Length: 125 cm (50"), wraps three times around a grown man's leg.

RATS or a "real" tourniquet?

The RATS is smaller and more affordable compared to many other designs, but it comes at a price: applying the RATS one-handed requires practice and the tourniquet must be tightened as you wrap it. The competing CAT and SOFT are easy to slip on one-handed and can be tightened after closing them with just the turn of a wrist.

Despite this the RATS is much better than fantasies about using a bicycle inner tube or trouser belt in a pinch: why would you prepare to improvise? Thanks to easy carry options the RATS is more likely to make it to people's EDC kits and it makes for a good backup tourniquet alongside a CAT.

And it works on kids.

I would recommend for a friend

While I haven't had to use it in a real life-or-death situation yet, I'm certain that this TQ would properly stop severe bleeding.

The much lower weight and packspace compared to more traditional TQs like CATs and SOFFTs makes it much easier to always keep with you, even when just wearing a T-shirt and Bordshorts.
It does however require more training than the more common Stick-Type options
