Jalas Fantom Drylock

Jalas Fantom Drylock

In Finland the comic character "The Phantom" (you know, the butch guy who runs around the Bengal jungle in purple tights) is immensely popular. In fact he's so famous that Jalas actually went and named a boot after him. And a top quality boot it is too! We are especially thrilled, as these fit our wide, hairy Finnish hobbit feet well.

As the weather gets cold and nasty, so do cotton undergarments. The answer is to switch to merino wool. These have a nice, snug fit for best functionality. We had these made in Lithuania just for us.

Austrian Bundesheer Gore-Tex trousers. These simple overtrousers are meant to be worn in conjunction with standard field trousers, but work on their own well enough.

British MVP trousers, DPM, surplus

MVP is the British Army equivalent to Gore-Tex. It has exactly the same qualities: waterproof, but still breathable to a degree, unlike rubber. These are the trousers of the MVP uniform.

Teesar ECWCS Level 5 Soft Shell trousers

Teesar ECWCS Level 5 Soft Shell trousers

44.99 USD

A decent civilian copy of the US Army Gen3 ECWCS Level 5 soft shell trousers in black, you won't look like a military-lunatic or deserter on the run in these! A very good choice for almost any use.

Pentagon Hermes softshell pants

Pentagon Hermes softshell pants

44.99 USD 88.99 USD

Full nylon "action pants". These keep wind and light rain off, and breathe way better than GTX membranes. An excellent compromise for general use during the more unstable months of the year, either with Merino wool underwear or not. As a bonus for the civilian, these don't even look all that warry while still have pocket room for the essentials.

Tired of swish-swish shells? Try these softies instead! These sound and look like regular cargo trousers, but are windproof, water resistant, and offer superior mobility thanks to a stretchy fabric.

The design is functional and stylish. Wearing these won't make you stand out as a tacticool person with combat trousers. A gusset hidden in the crotch allows unrestricted movement when need be, and the rear is raised to protect your lower back. Fleece lining makes these really warm, so expect these to perform best for active business in freezing temperatures or relaxed operations above zero Celsius.

The "easy" size is followed by waist circumference and inseam length in centimetres.

Softshell pants usually have two potential problems - either they don't have enough pockets, or they are pure shells that need another pair of pants underneath. These are an acceptable compromise - decent pockets (real cargo pockets!) and light fleece lining for warmth. Currently my favourite pair of activity pants for subzero temperatures. Though the inside pocket material feels quite flimsy, I'll wait and see how long it takes until there's a hole in my pocket.

EDIT: Housuissa ei näyttäisi olevan minkäänlaista DWR-käsittelyä, mutta kevyt sade/loska ei kuitenkaan tule läpi. These pants don't seem to have any DWR coating, but light rain/wet snow doesn't still come through.

I've bought these trousers for winter outdoor use and colder motorcycle rides. So far they are up to the job! Nice one!
As for the material, they are softshell material so they still kinda swish-swish when you walk around and look quite baggy. Good for movement though.

I'm a 33" waist and 30" length. The medium is a couple of centimeters too long. Works fine when wearing shoes/boots.
The waist band is Very adjustable and fits nicely. It's even so adjustable and I can wear these pants outside of a pair of jeans! Excellent for the commute!
Also, the fleece lining make them warm and fuzzy and very cosy. Looking forward to challenging the cold weather when the winter finally comes.
A little baggy and loose though, so I'm planning on upgrading these with a pair of suspenders. Then they'll be nice and comfy.
