Features

This multifunctional cap is transmogrified into a winter hat with a flick of a button. The faux fur flaps flippety flop down and protect your ears/face from the wrath of the Snow Queen. When the storm is over, just flip them up ago and you can boldly go towards the civilization.

Usually military winter headgear is white or snow camo but here Austrians have taken an invigoratingly different approach. These otherworldly green beauties will stand out no matter where you go. The design is somewhat similar to the winter hat of the rebel troops, so if you only take black & white selfies, you can imagine you’re in some galaxy far, far away.

Materials and care

There are field caps of different generations here, so the materials vary. On some of these, the shell fabric is 100% cotton, on others 65/35 polycotton. Also, the lining and insulation vary from wool to synthetics. There can be some other combinations, too.

Choosing the right size

The first figure is the EU size, which is the circumference of the head in centimeters, then the US size. The sizes are fairly accurate but not overly generous. If you like a bit looser fit, take one size bigger.

Condition

Used Austrian military surplus. The condition varies from very little used to more used. They have been stacked on top of each other so they might have flattened to some extent during the years. But they should get back in shape in use. They are all intact and serviceable though!

Austrian surplus

Functional, neutral, clean. That's what the Austrian Bundesheer gear is made of. Our Austrian surplus revolves mostly around the Anzug 75 and Anzug 03 clothing systems, but who knows, maybe the "Tarnanzug Neu" will make it's appearance if the Austrians decide to clear the stocks in the future. Get your OD gear while the stocks last.

After the Second World War the Austrian soldier looked like a weird mixture of Allies and Germans; the M1 style helmet and general profile really tried to bring that NATO vibe up, but a lot of the gear and even the dotted camouflage pattern looked surprisingly much like WW2 German issue. In the 70s they took a major leap towards NATO with the introduction of the all-green Anzug 75 clothing and equipment system closely inspired by the American equivalents, finally letting go of the "old stuff". The Anzug 03 brought the game up to date with some changes in effort to modernize the whole thing. Now the Bundesheer is again moving over to camouflage.

Went for a 56 and fit is ok, label has it dated from mid 80's and appears to be unissued or never used if it was. Tried it on straight out the bag as the heating hadn't quite kicked in when the postman had arrived and it was a bit chilly, found it to be adequately cold repelling in that setting and feel it would pretty toasty if worn when moving about doing vigorous outdoorsy stuff.

There's two flaps on the chin strap to cover the holes who's function I guess would be to allow one to hear better or fit ear defence (ear plug type) when the chin strap is in use.

The only thing I'm not a fan of on this hat is how the chin strap fastens under the chin as it seems pretty complicated to do up when your wearing it compared to other non-Velcro securing cold weather hats I've used and the token elasticated press stud on it the elastic has perished (the purpose of which when unfastened from its not in use securing point I've yet to figure out). That being said I'm a lazy git when it comes to chin straps on cold weather hats and am a staunch believer in letting them flap around like an over excited dogs ears

Itellä on olemassa tästä vähän vähemmän hauskanvihreä versio, joka tuli ostettua muutama vuosi sitten. Pää muuten pysyy tällä lämpimänä kovimillakin talvipakkasilla, vissiin on alpeilla kovat talvet. Paras käyttötapa tälle on laittaa nepparilla kiinni leuan alta jos joutuu makuupussissa talvella nukkumaan, ei muuten pysy pää siinäkohtaa kylmänä.
