The Austrian Bundesheer field cap with traditional Germanic design: looks a bit like a side cap with a peak added to the front. This is the modern interpretation of mountain jaeger's caps.

This flat army cap is very well suited for hot weather: it's made of lightweight 67/33 polyester-viscose and has ventilation grommets on the sides.

The peak is stiffened with fabric only; there are no hard plastics in the piece of headwear. This allows the cap to be folded and stowed in a jacket pocket when going indoors or other "no hat no salute"-areas.

Size info

Made to European cm-sizes, we've converted these to US hat sizes for you.

Condition

Used but in a pretty good condition - what would happen to a hat anyway? We used to have these with the cockades removed or crossed out but the latest batch is not marred like this.

Austrian surplus

Functional, neutral, clean. That's what the Austrian Bundesheer gear is made of. Our Austrian surplus revolves mostly around the Anzug 75 and Anzug 03 clothing systems, but who knows, maybe the "Tarnanzug Neu" will make it's appearance if the Austrians decide to clear the stocks in the future. Get your OD gear while the stocks last.

After the Second World War the Austrian soldier looked like a weird mixture of Allies and Germans; the M1 style helmet and general profile really tried to bring that NATO vibe up, but a lot of the gear and even the dotted camouflage pattern looked surprisingly much like WW2 German issue. In the 70s they took a major leap towards NATO with the introduction of the all-green Anzug 75 clothing and equipment system closely inspired by the American equivalents, finally letting go of the "old stuff". The Anzug 03 brought the game up to date with some changes in effort to modernize the whole thing. Now the Bundesheer is again moving over to camouflage.

I received a fairly worn sample. I may have to do some stitching before I can even begin to use it. Also the cap is more shapeless than on the picture, except the visor which is bent on the side and I am trying to press it into a less annoying shape. The price is low though, and if you want that south american junta death squad look this cap is perfect.

This cap is a bargain. It's priced so low that you can afford to wad it up and throw it in your ruck for backup head protection on a hike. It has more space for your noggin than does the Bundeswehr counterpart. While the latter requires you to pull it quite snug over the front of your head to get the visor to shade your eyes, this one has a peak towards the front that gives your brain more Lebensraum.
If you don't like the red Austrian bullseye on your forehead, you can always sew on a Särmä TST M05 Finnish cap badge for a nice blue version.

It is quite comfortable, elegant, light and resistant, mine arrived practically new from the factory or at least in very good condition, without a doubt the best 4 euros I have spent in a long time.

Hello,

The pictured item has a regular olive green outer edge of emblem, as opposed to grey outer ring that I received.

Could you please let me know what the grey variant signifies?

Not 100 % certain, but usually embroided emblems have a backing color that matches the color of the clothing.
Austians have used gray as well as olive gear, so I suppose your specimen is just from a lot that was made when there were a shortage of olive backed emblems, but plenty of grays still around.
