A fleece jacket offers breathability and insulation as a mid-layer in the cold and as a standalone jacket in milder weather. Here's some Austrian surplus with maximum breathability thanks to not having any kind of membrane.
The jacket works as a standalone jacket, not just a mid-layer. It has reinforced shoulders and elbows, patch and insignia locations on the sleeves and chest, and a hidden pocket and front pockets all with zippers. The front zipper is two-way with a flap on the back.
Most of the jacket has a single layer of fabric but the collar has four (!) layers as far as we can tell by feel. It folds easily out of the way so if there's a part of a garment that offers effective protection and ventilation as necessary, it's this one. Some of these have ventilation zippers in the armpits but many don't.
The hem is fairly short for an army jacket. Presumably, the idea is to keep it out of the way when wearing a battle belt and in the big picture, the Austrian thermal pants are bib-type to compensate.
Size info
These are not oversized as usual, but fit more like a sweater.
These are made in various widths and lengths. The Austrian Bundesheer size is in the brackets with regular numbers for the width and Roman numerals for the length.
The size conversions and recommendations are based on our measuring work, customer feedback, and naturally wearing these ourselves. Don't get hung up on the numbers, though: surplus clothes often have variation.
Pay attention! The numbers are recommended body measurements, not garment measurements!

Austrian surplus
Used but serviceable condition. It appears some of these have seen a hot wash at some point: the trims are not that elastic anymore and the fabric isn't always as fuzzy, airy, and soft as on new jackets. Nothing is broken, however, these are still good to go for a long time. Made in Austria or Spain (Fecsa).

Austrian surplus
Functional, neutral, clean. That's what the Austrian Bundesheer gear is made of. Our Austrian surplus revolves mostly around the Anzug 75 and Anzug 03 clothing systems, but who knows, maybe the "Tarnanzug Neu" will make it's appearance if the Austrians decide to clear the stocks in the future. Get your OD gear while the stocks last.
After the Second World War the Austrian soldier looked like a weird mixture of Allies and Germans; the M1 style helmet and general profile really tried to bring that NATO vibe up, but a lot of the gear and even the dotted camouflage pattern looked surprisingly much like WW2 German issue. In the 70s they took a major leap towards NATO with the introduction of the all-green Anzug 75 clothing and equipment system closely inspired by the American equivalents, finally letting go of the "old stuff". The Anzug 03 brought the game up to date with some changes in effort to modernize the whole thing. Now the Bundesheer is again moving over to camouflage.

The overall condition of the jacket I received is good, with the only flaw being one small hole through one of the layers of material at the top of the collar.
The sizing seems to be accurate, as I am 1.75m (5'9") tall with a 106cm (42") chest, and the large-regular fits perfectly.
