History

The Italian specialist mountain infantry is known in their own country as Alpini. The unit was born already in the 1870s, so it is the oldest active mountain infantry in the world. This pack has clearly been influenced by the US M41 mountain pack but we have no further knowledge of the age of this batch. One had a name tag with the year 1984, so that particular backpack has been in use then but most likely it has been made earlier.

Features

This Alpini pack is large, spacious, and fairly comfortable to carry for its age. Of course, if you are used to pansy modern packs, the comfort level is pretty relative. Dimensions c. 50 x 25 x 40cm (20" x 10" x 16"). It is safe to say that this will fit more stuff than you can comfortably carry in the mountains.

The main compartment is just one big space without any inner pockets. It is tightened shut with a peculiar chain contraption and closed with a flap. Don’t ask us how the Italian army code dictates that you use the chain correctly, we bet even the Pope doesn’t know that. The basic idea is that the flaps with grommets tighten together to close the opening so that thieving army buddies or mountain wolves cannot access your foodstuff. There is no locking mechanism, so you might need to secure the chain with a padlock or a protective spell. If the chain makes you uncomfortable, you can easily replace it with a drawcord that makes more sense.

In addition to the main compartment, the pack has three c. 25 x 15 cm (10" x 6") pockets and a small flat pocket for a name tag on the flap. The adjustable shoulder straps are fairly wide but unpadded. They have loops on the front where you can attach some gear, or use them to rest your arms. The steel frame feels quite comfortable as long as it fits your back. With a little bit of violence, you can adjust it to some extent if it doesn’t. Some packs come with a hip belt but since so many don’t, take it as a bonus if you get one. It is just looped in between the frame without any securing system, so it is very easy to put a new one if your pack doesn't have one.

Materials

These backpacks have been made from proper good materials like they used to do back in the days. The fabric is thick and sturdy cotton canvas, the color of which varies from a bit greener to a bit khakier. All shades are nicely soothing. The buckles, the closure system, and the frame are steel and the reinforcements leather.

Condition

Used Italian military surplus but in perfectly serviceable condition. Some have seen more use and some less but since these were made to survive in very tough conditions, they will be usable for a long time still.
