While this set is designed for hunters, it's also very useful for anyone in contact with firearms. It's a sensible set to keep in the car, too. All the components come from SharkMed, which is a Finnish company specializing in tactical first aid and emergency medical care training and products.
Accidents can happen in wilderness
Most hunters are careful and hunting is a safe hobby. Especially when you look at how many hunters there are, firearm-related accidents are rare. However, when you move in difficult terrain, handle firearms and sharp objects, and burn stuff, it is always possible that something happens. Most of the accidents are minor but it is always possible to get hurt really severely. And it is stupid not to be prepared.
Always take along a good first aid kit. It can save your or somebody else’s life. And in case of a smaller oops, you don’t have to quit what you’re doing and go find a bandaid at the cabin.
How do you use this stuff?
It isn’t very practical to put a whole cABC of first aid in the product description. You should take a course to get a lot more out of first aid kits. It is especially important to learn to use a tourniquet. In case of a bigger mishap, the patient will bleed to death before help gets in the middle of nowhere. A tourniquet doesn’t weigh much but it will give you much-needed time. When placed correctly on the limb (as high as possible is the easy rule), it will stop a massive bleed.
Scissors are handy when cutting bandages but can also be used for cutting open garments of the injured in case they are in the way. It is worth remembering that a slightly lower body temperature is already serious hypothermia for a patient that has suffered a traumatic injury. Because of this, hypothermia can be a serious risk even in summer in many places but especially during the three other seasons. You should thus always try to keep the patient warm and therefore you should carry a space blanket with you.
