80's field jacket features

We guess people don't buy old surplus jackets for their details anymore, but these Dutch ones have some pretty unique feats that demand a little attention.

Buttons for attaching a hood and liner are found at the neck and on the inside. Neither accessory is included or available.

The jacket can be adjusted for fit with twin tabs at the cuffs and drawstrings at the hem and waist. The hem drawcord should be elastic, but this may not apply in all cases. Instead of conventional cord locks, the jacket has short sections of webbing sewn at the passage for a hitch of your liking.

The pockets are arranged in a common 4-front pocket fashion, but the lower pocket flaps have a traditional curved look while the chest pockets look like they were designed with body armor in mind: they are heavily biased to the sides and angled to open towards the center. The inside has a very small hidden pocket.

Size info

At the time of writing, we had only found two sizes: Small and Medium. The sizes are rather loose, so pick a smaller one for a close fit. If you plan to layer something underneath, your typical size will do fine. The Dutch people are among the tallest in Europe so the sleeve length is suitable for above-average heights.

Material and care

Made of 100 % cotton, can be washed at hot temperatures (60 degrees Celsius). The weave is very tight, so the fabric swells in the rain and becomes a denser shell but you can also wax it for weatherproofing.

Dutch army surplus

European-made quality stuff from the past. These jackets are from a time when things mattered more. Somewhat smelly and scruffy, though, as the soldiers who wore these in service. The occasional drawstring at the waist or hem may be missing, replace it with paracord if necessary. In need of a wash and airing, but otherwise in a good condition and serviceable.

Mine's not from Varusteleka, but it's still the same coat. Nice and comfy, has plenty of adjustments for /skeleton/ bros. Get one a bit large and have infinite room for layering, but can still be worn by itself in summer/autumn and tightened down.

I still have my dad's one, full of metal patches and survived many a festival. Might be a decade older but seems to be the same build. Good stuff.

"The Dutch people are among the tallest in Europe" sorry but you left out prettiest and smartest.
I have one of these (the jacket) and they are old school good.

This is, without a doubt, the best jacket I've owned so far. The material is robust and heavy, but the jacket itself is incredibly comfortable, as well as a really unique look. It arrived in perfect condition, practically new from the factory (even the tags were in mint condition!). I would definitely buy one again in the future, although the one I have will probably last longer than myself. 10/10.

I picked one up from a flea market in Amsterdam with the matching hood and rank slide attached and a field dressing in a pocket. Whilst well worn in is among my better jackets for wearing, build quality is designed for taking a battering in comparison to some of my more modern jackets and being an olive drab considerably less militant. To me appearance wise it's like the bastard offspring of the Belgian M-64 or British 1960 pattern and US M-65 jackets/smocks.

Just need to track down the correct button in liner now to complete it, although it feels thick enough and borderline warm enough to send you down with heat stroke if moving around in non-arctic region weather conditions even without the liner.

Absolute tank of a jacket and it looks gorgeous. Mine looks pretty much brand new except the initials of it's previous owner and the missing drawstrings which I can always replace with a bit of paracord. I can't believe I only paid 20EUR for it. Absolute steal.

Any idea how I can find the liner or hood?

Hi Rodney! Unfortunately we do not have them for sale ourselves - surplus is very tricky with availability. I'd suggest taking a look at Ebay, Etsy etc. Or just layering up! We at the moment of writing this do have some stock of the lovely Dutch bear shirt that would go lovely with this jacket.
