Zum Teufel, what an überfine East German raincoat! Put this on and your uniform won’t get wet when you arrest the enemies of the state in crappy weather.

Features

What on earth did they think when they took the Gestapo-style cut and eastern bloc buttoning and combined them with a jolly poison green raincoat? At least you got a very unique garment, that you won’t see on the streets that often. And if you do, your devious plots against the Government have been revealed, and the labor camps await.

There are small ventilation holes under the sleeves and bigger ventilation holes with zippers underneath those. The coat has two side pockets. The one on the right also has an opening through which you can access the stuff underneath. The pocket on the left also has a small additional pocket. Furthermore, there is a buttoned inside breast pocket and another one without a button on the other side.

Materials and care

This fabric is this awesome rustling, swishing, and porn-store smelling vinylrubberite. In other words, some waterproof synthetic stuff with silicone coating. If you want more details than that, you probably need to break into the Stasi archive. The fabric breathes as nicely as a vinyl-clad hippo that has bad asthma but it keeps you dry. Wash at 30 egress Celsius (86 F).

Choosing the right size

The Germanic sizing system requires slight code-breaking skills. The cryptic number on the jacket indicates both the recommended height and chest circumference of the user in centimeters. If it has the full chest circumference, the jacket is Long, half a chest means Regular, and the quarter means Short. No need to dig out your Enigma though. We decoded these in the size selection already.

Achtung! This raincoat is designed to be worn on top of all your other clothes, so the measurement is fairly big. Measure your chest on top of the clothes or take a notch smaller if you plan on being nekkid underneath.

Condition

Used East German polizei sürplus. These are fairly nicely used but some may be a bit patched up due to wrestling with the enemies of the state or something like that. The left shoulder has had a couple of insignia patches/name tags removed, leaving some of the loose threads still there.

Are you guys sure this is an GDR Greatcoat? Looks more like a Bundesgrenzschutz or West German police raincoat to me. Typically East German forces have buttons with flattened edges, those seen here are the typical Bundeswehr-style ones. Also the East German Volkspolizei has raincoats, but these usually have the same style as the NVA: One row of hidden buttons and a belt.
