French M63 sleeping bag, surplus
Looking for a temperate weather sleeping bag, a complete package? Are you an average size person? This bag has everything fixed on: waterproof bottom, fixed packsack which also works as a pillowcase - just stuff it full of clothes. The cotton interior is definitely less sweaty than nylon and polyester found on many others.
Choosing a vintage sleeping bag is not a rational move when you look at the numbers, but it doesn't necessarily mean a bad night's sleep either - it's mostly that these are a tad heavier for the warmth than modern ones.
First off, note the length and width: these reach the shoulders and are suitable up to a 185 cm (6' 1") tall person of a medium build at most. The design is great if you don't like to have your head enclosed within the bag.
The foot-end tapers down and has a tall box for your feet, so it's just the right shape without excess air dwelling about in the bag.
One thing casual campers will often struggle with is packing their sleeping bags. Not with the M63! The stuff sack is large enough so you can just make a couple of folds, roll and stuff with ease. The sack and straps are integrated with the sleeping bag so you won't have to look for them, and the pack can be attached to your backpack or sissy-bar without fuss.
When deployed, the stuff sack doubles as a pillow-case. Stuff it with straws, spare clothes or such to make a pillow and protect your valuables from theft.
Measurements and specs
The bag is made of cotton with a waterproof nylon base and metal zipper. The stuffing is most likely polyester. Avoid washing the bag at all: rather use a liner and air out the bag after each use.
- Length: 178 cm (70") (without the stuff sack/pillow, imagine yourself headless)
- Width at shoulders: 77 cm (30")
- Width at feet: 58 cm (23")
- Packed size: 44 x 20 x 25 cm (17" x 8" x 10")
- Weight: approx. 2 kg (4.2 lbs)
Official temperature ratings are not available, but we don't recommend this in such cold weather that water would freeze, at least not on its own. As a general summer & autumn bag it should work well!
French army surplus
These have seen some use, but are overall in good condition. The quality of manufacturing is good, as these were made to last in combat conditions. Expect a storage smell, most of which should air out.
