Dutch "Woobie" Poncho liner, surplus

Price 32.99 USD excluding sales tax

The lightweight poncho liner or "Woobie" was designed by the US military as a replacement for the wool blanket during the Vietnam war. Compared to the blanket, this is a lot lighter, a bit warmer dries faster, and can be squeezed into a pretty small space. These are Dutch army surplus, copy of the US model.

  • Like a blanket, but made of thin, polyester-filled nylon
  • Tie-cords all around
  • Packs smaller than a football

How the Woobie works

The perfect blanket for summer use. Originally used in the Vietnam war, this became the standard-issue sleeping gear for hot climates or general summer use. It is mostly meant to be used in conjunction with the rain poncho, as a liner. The process is very simple: tie the liner to the grommets of the poncho, then button the poncho so it resembles a tube. Get in and sleep. The US Army states that the lowest manageable temperature is about +10 C°. The poncho liners are still used and loved in the US Army. The strings on these might be a tad differently placed than on some ponchos, but you'll find them in the corners anyway.

Some dimensions

Measurements about 155 x 225 cm / 61" x 89". Weight about 800 grams / 2.8 oz. Can be compressed to a size smaller than a football. Materials used are lightweight ripstop-nylon and polyester batting.

Tips for use

These go well with any NATO poncho with grommets on the sides (US, German, British, of course, Dutch and Mil-Tec poncho will also work).

Pro Tip: with little work you could make this a nice liner bag for your sleeping bag - it's probably roughly about one season more to your bag's temperature rating. In other words, a light summer bag would still work a bit later on and a three-season bag would become a pretty serious winter bag. We haven't tried this in real life, so this is purely hypothetical, but at least it shouldn't make the bag colder!

Condition

The examples we picked at random were in OK shape. Some tie cords can be missing but these are very easily replaced.

Got one in perfect condition and as a bonus everything was stuffed into a free small British PLCE bergen liner bag :)
The quality of the DPM version of this woobie is a way better than the American woodland version I also have, that one is crap so buy this instead! Just wish that there was a thicker version too so it was more useful during winter time.

It arrived with a camo stuff sack with a soldier's name written on it, but there weren't any signs of use on the blanket itself.

Edit (5/22/2020): I ordered a second poncho liner when they were briefly back in stock, and it arrived in similar very good condition, but the second one did not include a stuff sack. The product description doesn't indicate that it should come with one, so I assume that this is just a difference in how this particular lot arrived to Varusteleka. It remains a fantastic deal for an excellent piece of kit.

Nice and warm enough for spring weather. Surprisingly thin. Well-made; absolutely no sign of having ever been used. Seems durable enough to hold up against most any weather and terrain, but I have not yet had the chance to put it to the test.
(For a Dutch one, I expected at least some text in Dutch or other indication other than simply 'woodland, KL.' I am also unsure as to whether I actually have the DPM or the woodland one, or if they are one and the same.)

A bit disappointed that the product did not come with any stuffsack. Would have been such a useful addition. While light and stows away nicely, a stuffsack would definitely have been useful to keep it packed away neat and snug when out and about.

Overall, really great piece of gear for just about anything.

Super good, new condition! This has become my ''Go-To'' gadget on the trips, warms better than a regular blanket, just give it time. Spent a whole week sleeping on a couch with this by my side. Can imagine that this is perfect as an extra thing to have during cold winter overnight in a sleeping bag, otherwise this is probably enough to sleep with during hot summer nights or just to wear at the camp fire.
