Almost a rarity nowadays - genuine Bundeswehr leather jackboots, or "Marschstiefel". Only a very small lot available.

A very honest, no-bullshit jackboot made of tough leather. The outer soles are hard rubber, sometimes with steel heel pieces and sometimes an aggressive-looking steel reinforcement plate has been clamped onto the nose. Additionally, the shaft can be tightened with a "democracy buckle" (on the other side of the wall they didn't have those, and neither did Hitler's Wehrmacht, so that's probably the origin of the nickname).

These represent the old way of thinking: it doesn't have to be fast and breathable, it just has to last. Just replace the heel piece and half-sole when they are worn enough and you're good to go again. And well, since these are decades old, used, and still, in OK serviceable shape, there's no questioning their durability.

Condition

Properly used. This means there will be wear on the soles accompanied by any normal scuffs and scratches and whatever. The leather is stiff, grease it up to get it back to shape. Overall these do need some cleaning.

As a special note, the glue holding the rubber tap soles in place might have lost its grip over the years and they will peel off easily. This is remedied by finding the nearest cobbler's shop and having them either glued back on or just getting a pair of new-made half soles clamped on. Simple!

These boots are awesome! Super heavy leather and overall bomb proof construction. Mine look better than the ones pictured. Very dry, soaking up grease like nobody's business. Like the Finnish jackboots they really need the Jalas insoles to be comfortable. Great purchase!

Absolutely met expectations as far as material quality, but arrived with one heel quite loose and a nail sticking through the half sole around the instep, only just barely poking through the insole (and didn’t get through my wool socks at first try-on), found it when I pulled the (very worn) insoles and it snagged.
I bought size 42, as I wear 42’s Doc Martens and Keens, my feet are short, closer to 40’s but also very wide ducky things so I’m forced to size up - the 42 jackboots are longer than my Docs but narrow, almost too snug through the bridge with double socks. Maybe German dudes usually have narrow feet? Leather is heavy and stiff, drinking the grease like an Icelander drinks Brennevin. Once they’ve formed to my feet I’ll probably revise this review.

These jackboots are grade 2 boots. I bought two pairs recently. The soles are okay, but the heels are worn to a certain extent. The leather, especially on one pair, is stiff and shows repairs, scars, deep cuts, and so on. I used a lot of premium neatsfoot oil to soften this old leather. I'll have to restitch some pieces with a good thread using saddler's techniques. It's up to you to decide whether it's still worth buying these jackboots.

First off, I love these. I'd wanted a pair for many years before they appeared on here, and I'm glad they did.

I'm not an expert but these appear to be Knobelbechers Model 1957. Mine came with Both toe and heel irons, and apparently the heels irons were dropped sometime in the 1960s (don't take my word for it). There's also a huge "65" written on the shaft, so maybe that's a give away. I dunno. In any case these boots could be as old as my parents.

The sole was in like-new condition. Relatively unworn, and the irons were also in great condition. I think I caused more damage to the irons from walking on bitumen roads than they had acquired before coming into my possession. They'd clearly been re-soled by the Bundeswehr at some point and mustn't have seen much use since. The leather is somewhat beaten and dry, but completely intact. There's no critical damage to the construction anywhere that I could see. With that said, the leather is DRY. It's old, and there are small cracks inside the folds where most of the flexion takes place. I conditioned them when I first received them, and again recently when I noticed they were still looking a little dry.

For fit, they are fine I guess. I am exactly a size 43 and unfortunately could only get a size 42, but the boot still fits okay. The fit is narrow, which is excellent for me, but imaginably not for everyone. For someone with wide feet I think they'd be quite uncomfortable. The shafts are also (relatively) narrow. Again - good for me, but for someone with wide calves, they can be adjusted by way of a buckle at the top of the shaft.

I removed the heel irons and put them away. They were too noisy, and I got too many looks for the loud banging my footsteps made. Aside from this, I found them a little slippery on hard surfaces, and didn't want to slip over on a rainy day. I kept the rather aggressive-looking toe irons and overall find the boots to be rather striking and handsome. For approximately 100 Australian dollars I am very satisfied with my purchase.

I rate them at 9/10. For me, they are very nice but again if you are a wider-foot person I think you'll find them uncomfortable.

Australian point of view here,
These boots are perfect for the bush in the North, where venomous snakes are an issue, the tall boots cover your lower legs which are the most likely to be attacked.
I have ordered two pairs of these from Varusteleka, the first had some scares and needed some grease, good honest wear, perfect for hunting or farm work, of your not a girly man.... or maybe if you are.
Fit like a glove, so I ordered a second pair, received an unissued pair with unused sole and Toe Taps, supple leather, could not have asked for more, fast delivery from the other side of the world during a Pandemic.
Thanks to my friends in Finland

Product is basically as described. These boots have definitely seen use, the leather and the insoles were quite hardened, but nothing unfixable. Soles were in decent condition. My only issue is that there is chalk? numbers on each boot (I suppose for tracking/sorting purposes in storage) that will not come out. If I rub hard enough they start to fade, but then I think I start bringing off the finish, so I may have to refinish these boots. While I do like them and are very happy with them, they are definitely boots that you will need to service to some degree. But for the price, who cares? The size 41 pair I ordered also fit me very well - size seems spot on.

Soles on the bottom of both boots were barely held on and flopped around. One boot had the soles barely held in by tiny brass nails. Insoles were completely missing out of the boots. Oddly, the boots reek of mildew and the leather is dried and cracked. The boots have deep cuts and scratches in the leather, as if a German had decided to challenge a badger one night.

On the bright side, as soon as I put in some insoles the boots fit perfectly and are quite comfortable.

I cannot recommend these boots because they will need a lot of TLC to get back to a useful state.
