Proper old timey paratrooper smocks from the days when men were made of wood and military gear was made to last! These 50´s smocks are actually quite something, a damn practical model with big pockets, a generous and roomy cut and materials that really make most modern clothes ashamed of themselves. It´s quite a miracle really that old relics like these are still around in numbers, but some day soon these too will be all gone! And these have quite a history to them too, some of these very jackets may have taken part in the wild mercenary wars of the Congo in the 1960´s.

  • Button closure, some have a zipper and press studs.
  • Large, bellowed pockets with buttons.
  • Two deep pockets on the inside of the chest.
  • Adjustable waist and hem, the waist drawstring may have gone missing.
  • Beaver tail, or "rump strap", a jockstrap-like contraption that keeps the jacket in place during parachute jumps. On some jackets these have been removed or sewn to the back.
  • Ventilation slit on the back and in the armpits.

Regarding sizing

First the Belgian size number, then our efforts in deciphering these: first up is user height, then chest circumference in centimetres. The sleeves tend to run a bit short - this is probably intentional, as they won't get in the way when doing parachutey stuff.

Condition

Used, faded and repaired when necessary. These are still in perfectly serviceable condition, altough a button or two may be missing.

I've been using one of these for three years now. I only wish someone would make an exact copy in khaki, so I could wear it everyday. Practically undistructable, windproof and waterproof (mine has been through many storms). Just put something warm under it.

I left a review of this item on the M90 smock page because I couldn't find this item's page again until just now. Anyway, fits perfectly, kinda...stinky...but that happens when the jacket is a 1958 vintage. The colors on my jacket were running a little bit, but the iconic jigsaw pattern is still crisp enough that you can make it out; which is impressive for a jacket that old. Cool side note, I found a wrapper for an old Belgian chocolate bar in the pocket of my jacket, which seems to indicate that the jacket may have actually been issued to and worn by a soldier at one point. At the very least, someone somewhere at some-point wore it.

Very cool smock, but wickedly short for the sizes given above. I'm 172cm, and the size 5 (175-185) is just long enough in body. The arms are short'ish, but that was mentioned in the sizing information.

So buy taller than you need, and you'll get an awesome, unique jacket that looks to last a lifetime.

The fabric this smock is made from is so stout you could probably use this as a motorcycle jacket. It is probably going to last until I'm an old man. I bought the matching button-on hood that Varusteleka sells and sewed it on because I wanted it on permanently. I also replaced the draw cords with paracord because they slide so much easier and put on new cord stops. The fabric is so tightly woven and strong that it's a very effect windbreaker and keeps the rain off great as well. Although once wet it takes a long time to air dry. A thick wool sweater underneath to keep you warm and this smock over top to block the wind and weather and you have just about the perfect combination.
