WTF Tarnanzug Neu?

Tarnanzug Neu is the latest Austrian camouflage pattern first issued in 2019 to the Styrian Jägerbataillon 18 and then gradually to other units. The innovative name created by the army’s marketing department translates to “camouflage outfit new”. It is based on the Tarndruck SEK and Tarndruck beige patterns, although it uses spots instead of digital pixels.

It is clearly designed as a multi-use camouflage pattern that conceals well enough in most environments but isn’t optimized for anything specific. It creates a fairly decent camo effect in a forested environment and a very good one in a more arid environment. The blue-grey color was probably added for urban use. The pattern is also designed to be difficult to spot with night vision gear.

Features

Featurewise this is a pretty traditional unlined combat jacked with a button closure. It has two zippered pockets on the chest and one on each sleeve. The zippers have metal pulls together with green cords to make them easier to use with gloves on. The cuffs have hook and loop adjustments to keep the wind outside.

The sleeves have velcro slots for patches. The right sleeve features a rectangular 135 x 75 mm (5.3” x 3”) slot, and the left 80 x 55 mm (3.2” x 2.2”) shield-shaped slot. On the chest, you have a velcro slot for a name tag.

Materials

The fabric is 67 percent polyester and 33 percent cotton.

Size info

First the easy size, then the user's recommended height and chest circumference in centimeters or inches. These are a tad oversized to accommodate stuff underneath. The Austrian size system is explained in detail on our Austrian jacket size chart page.

Condition

Austrian military surplus. These are used but in a very nice way.

Austrian surplus

Functional, neutral, clean. That's what the Austrian Bundesheer gear is made of. Our Austrian surplus revolves mostly around the Anzug 75 and Anzug 03 clothing systems, but who knows, maybe the "Tarnanzug Neu" will make it's appearance if the Austrians decide to clear the stocks in the future. Get your OD gear while the stocks last.

After the Second World War the Austrian soldier looked like a weird mixture of Allies and Germans; the M1 style helmet and general profile really tried to bring that NATO vibe up, but a lot of the gear and even the dotted camouflage pattern looked surprisingly much like WW2 German issue. In the 70s they took a major leap towards NATO with the introduction of the all-green Anzug 75 clothing and equipment system closely inspired by the American equivalents, finally letting go of the "old stuff". The Anzug 03 brought the game up to date with some changes in effort to modernize the whole thing. Now the Bundesheer is again moving over to camouflage.

Loistava rotsi! Hihat on pikkasen lyhkäiset regular koossa joten 175 cm pitkänä ja 107 rinnanympäryksen omaavana otin Large Long koon jossa taasen pitkä helma, asia joka on helpompi korjata poistamalla materiaalia helmasta kuin sen lisääminen hihoihin.

Great jacket! The sleeves are a bit short in the regular size, so as 175 cm tall and with a 107 bust, I took the Large Long size, which again has a long hem, something that is easier to fix by removing material from the hem than adding it to the sleeves.

If these ever come back in stock, you've got to get one. I am 5'10" (178 cm) with a 38" (97 cm) chest, and the small-regular size fits me perfectly. Sleeves are a touch short if you're used to civilian stuff, but not uncomfortably so. Looks brand new, no signs of wear at all.

Oh, and the camo is super awesome too. It's a piece of modern history!

182/96 and Small Regular fits me nicely.
The tag on the neck dates 2018. May be a little questionable from the date, but thankfully it's not a Chinese imitation as those are usually made with zippers.
It has all the same features as the ANZUG 03 blouse, the only difference are the hook-and-loop attachments on the shoulder being larger.
The fabric is comfortable as it should be.
Wholly recommended if you collect camouflage garments.
