Features

These black army boots look quite a bit like the Austrian KAZ 03 boots, but they are somewhat lighter. One boot weights c. 920 grams / 2 lbs (43). The larger ones naturally more and the smaller ones less. These are full leather boots without a lining or a membrane, so they breathe very well. Originally designed to be used in the mountains but they also work on flat Earth, too. The soles aren't any stiffer than in our other regular army boots. The Welt-construction enables resoling, which is usually available with a lot more money involved. Speed lacing familiar from hiking boots.

Choosing the right size

These are manufactured in the EU size system but we have also included the corresponding US/UK size.

Condition

Used Austrian military surplus. Some have seen less use, some considerably more. However, they are all intact and the soles aren’t worn out either. With proper polishing, you can make them look quite nice. Of course, if you want pristine shoes, buy brand spanking new ones.

Note that army surplus boots don’t usually come with insoles and even if they do, they are usually crappy. Get a pair of good insoles, e.g. from us and you will be happier.

Austrian surplus

Functional, neutral, clean. That's what the Austrian Bundesheer gear is made of. Our Austrian surplus revolves mostly around the Anzug 75 and Anzug 03 clothing systems, but who knows, maybe the "Tarnanzug Neu" will make it's appearance if the Austrians decide to clear the stocks in the future. Get your OD gear while the stocks last.

After the Second World War the Austrian soldier looked like a weird mixture of Allies and Germans; the M1 style helmet and general profile really tried to bring that NATO vibe up, but a lot of the gear and even the dotted camouflage pattern looked surprisingly much like WW2 German issue. In the 70s they took a major leap towards NATO with the introduction of the all-green Anzug 75 clothing and equipment system closely inspired by the American equivalents, finally letting go of the "old stuff". The Anzug 03 brought the game up to date with some changes in effort to modernize the whole thing. Now the Bundesheer is again moving over to camouflage.

Good boots, both on duty and outdoors, for hiking. Sewn with the sole, more water-resistant with shoe paste. easy to clean. not as clumsy as. the KAZ03 combat boots. I had no problems with driving, both with the tank and car. if I didn't already have a beloved pair, I would order one here right away.

Parin talvisen koiran kusetuslenkin perusteella olen ns.

I think I lucked out because mine came in rather good (used) shape with brand new 2015 soles. The leather was dry but that was remedied with some olive oil to clean the grease pen marks and some leather lotion to bring them back to life. Once resurrected, I had a SHARP pair of boots on my hands. The insoles were old-school corkboard planks which was pretty interesting but I immediately replaced with with the Jalas FX2s (also an interesting design). I'm a size 10.5 Merrell and size 11 Garmont and I ordered a size EU 45 in these boots, the fit is pretty good with some wiggle room for an extra pair of socks.

The boots were immediately worn in -20 Fahrenheit with heavy snow and proved remarkably resilient for how thin the leather is. I would not dare call these winter boots though, more like field boots for spring and fall. I was also struck by how light they are, almost more like a pair of leather dress shoes with ankle support. These are badass boots and I plan on grabbing a pair of KAZ 03s. I have yet to go wrong with Austrian surplus and Varusteleka's service!

One half star deducted because I think the Austrian elf who resoled these in 2015 was hitting the Schnapps while working. The right sole is sewn on visibly crooked but this doesn't affect feel very noticeably, just looks odd.

Came quite creased (but only at the toe box), the leather is not overly dry and really just needs a good bit of mink oil or some other nourishment to keep it going. I was a bit surprised that the (worn but still usable) outsole said 2003 since it was fairly well taken care of. As described, the insoles were less than ideal, but that's alright since they're pretty good for making clacking sounds. The exterior leather was only lightly scratched. Took about 3 hours to break in after some cleaning and conditioning. This costs about USD100 less than new, I think that's an excellent deal. One thing that wasn't as good was that on my pair, the laces included only made it up to the point before the lacing hooks, that's easy to replace though.

Edit: I put in some 180cm laces from Mil-Tec (purchased here), it's a pretty good fit.

Hyvänoloiset kengät mehtään ja kylille. Itselle osui melkeinpä uudenveroinen pari, ei mitään merkintöjä. Kantapäissä muutama naarmu, siinä kaikki käytön jäljet mitä löysin. Uudet pohjalliset kannattaa tosiaan kopata samalla mukaan. Ilmoitettu koko piti ainakin itsellä kutinsa, koon 43 jalkaan saman koon kenkä istuu hyvin. Lestin leveyden riittävyyttä arvoin pitkään ennen tilausta mutta hyvin tuo tuntuisi riittävän tällaiselle tavan suomi-räpylälle. Toi welt-pohja oli itselle ratkaiseva juttu ostopäätöksen kannalta. Tällä hetkellä eteisestä löytyy särmä hyppymaiharin eka versio jossa on niinikään ommeltu pohja, ja lisäks toi uudempi liimatulla pohjalla oleva särmä-nilkkuri.

Tosin matalan jalkaholvin ugrilaiselle vaatii hieman totuttelua .
Espanjan hevosenkuva - rasvaa pintaan pensselillä ja yöksi sanomalehtipaperia suppuun kärkeen .

Loistavat vaelluskengat. Perinteinen nahkamaihari, hyvassa mielessa.

Pretty impressive pair of boots. Mine were from 1983, but had light wear. No major gouges or damage. I took acetone to mine to remove the old shoe polish and grime. Then applied many many coats of leather oil and conditioner. They came right back to life. These boots would likely be upwards of 400 dollars today with the build construction characteristics and the quality of leather used inside and out. Thank you Varusteleka!

Incredibly impressed with these boots. MIne arrived in what I would consider amazing condition considering they are date stamped 1982! You could tell me they were 4 years old and I would never think that they were made when the Berlin Wall was still in one piece. Should have ordered some of the highly recommended Jalas insoles at the same time, but hey, who doesn't need an excuse to order more stuff from Varusteleka? I wear a US Size 10 and the Euro 44 is a bit too big, but I didn't want to risk the 43 being too small and miss out on owning a pair of these great boots.

To clear some things up:
Those are not mountain boots! They are normal combat boots mainly inteded for light duty. Not everything comming from Austria is intended for mountain use!
"Alpschuh" is just a manufacturer of boots, just like Kastinger/Stampa or Steinkogler.
The Austrian Army issued three kinds of boots:
. Those here (Feldschuh 08 - Field Boot 08), intended for light/barracks duty and parade. They are now being replaced by a shitty and cheap plastic boot that nobody likes.
. Next are the heavier ones (Kampfschuh 08 - Combat Boot 08) intended for heavy duty like fighting and hiking, also sometimes for mountaineering.
. And lastly the actual mountain boots (Hochgebirgsschuh - High Mountain Boot). Only mountain troops are issued those boots.
There are also lighter jungle boots made from leather and canvas, intended for hotter climates but also used for light/barrack duty.
