Day trips are easy: there's not much to carry and it's inexpensive. Going for a hike in nature is kinda like going for a stroll in town, just the environment is more relaxing. Many cities have parks and bushes you can just walk into. You won't need to cook anything or prepare to spend the night, but do take snacks, water and a first aid kit with you.

On your feet

On single-day hikes the terrains are rarely demanding and there's so little to carry, that there are no special demands for footwear: you can go out in sneakers if you like. In the wet you'll want something that keeps your socks dry, and do carry a spare pair of socks just in case. They don't weigh much but can really save your day.

On you

What you wear depends a lot on the season. Something to keep you warm when you take a break is good to have. If you get too warm, vent excess heat immediately and put your jacket in your backpack. Luckily weather forecasts are fairly reliable for one day, so you don't need to prepare for everything.

On your back

Chances are, you can make an enjoyable day trip even without a backpack entirely. If you choose carefully what you carry and wear something like a Windproof Smock, you can pack everything in your pockets. Hiking without a backpack adds to the sense of freedom. If you must, choose a small backpack. Let style dictate the choice if you please: this kind of use is not very demanding.

In your bag

Packing for a short trip is an exercise in luxury. You can bring along something you like to tinker with, gourmet coffee accessories, a hammock and a book. Whatever you wish! However, don't forget First Aid essentials and water.
